You don't like poetry/Full feeling disclosure: NSFRobots
Title help: I struggle with titles, and would appreciate feedback for this one (along with other feedback of course).
You don't like poetry
for its awkward diction
and who knows what else,
so just pretend
this is a reddit post
with the heading
Full feeling disclosure: NSFRobots.
The ground wasn't giving,
so you stood and hopped
on the shovel's edge
to move the dirt, so we could bury
a box from an online eyewear store
wrapped in white muslin.
Your shoulders curved
as you patted down the soil,
and the sun was behind you in the West,
so I couldn't see your face.
I sometimes wonder
what you thought about that—
my strange need to grieve,
with ceremony, what we had decided
not to have. Or my strangled prayer,
said aloud at the tiny graveside:
a supplication to a God you know
not to exist.
And I know poetry isn't your thing,
but I felt your pulse
shivering with adrenaline, that awe
when, one week later,
we stood and stared
into the mouth of the earth
at the Grand Canyon together,
and that's poetry too.
