Keto 👏 Is 👏 Not 👏 Magic
If you listen to the people interviewed you hear some common trends.
- They lost weight but gained it all back
- They were still able to eat as much as before just in smaller increments.
The clue is 'they were able to eat as much as before' so of course they ended up back where they started because their calories increased back to previous levels. That's not 'starvation mode', that is just what happens when you start eating too much again.
I've seen the Marketplace segment before and I agree that WLS without some form of counselling is not going to be very helpful because, if people are not mentally in the right place to be able to stick to a diet, they'll work out ways to cheat after WLS. It can still work that way round but it feels like putting the cart before the horse.
However the bit that annoys me most is in the comments section. Aside from giving medical advice to people who have undergone surgery the 38 year old 4'10 female should not be eating 1800 calories a day. If she follows his advice and is also sedentary she'll end up at 205lbs, a BMI of 43. Good job calories don't matter I guess /s
I'm sorry what's keto?
If you limit carbohydrates enough (usually 20 net grams a day or less) your body will go into a state called ketosis where it burns fat rather than glucose. People who induce dietary ketosis are considered as following the Keto diet. It's different from a general low-carb diet which is usually limited to 50 net grams a day or less and which doesn't induce ketosis in most people.
It can help people lose weight because some people find that fat is more satiating than carbs so feel full on less food and because a lot of high-calorie foods such as crisps, bread and rice are banned so people might replace them with lower-calorie food. It's also good for losing a lot of water weight initially.
Some people think though, because they ate a low volume of high-calorie foods before starting Keto and now eat a high volume of low-calorie foods that they are eating more food and therefore calories don't matter. Many people don't need to count calories on Keto but that's only if they listen to their hunger signals and stop eating when they've had enough. If you have a wonky hunger/fullness signal (as many people do after years of overeating) you can still gain weight on a Keto diet unless you count calories.
It's a case of different strokes for different folks. Some people thrive on Keto and some people hate every second of it. Whether someone likes it depends largely on what sort of food they like. I adore pulses and beans so I wouldn't enjoy it but people who mainly like meat, green veg and cheese will enjoy it far more.
Cool thanks for the in depth explanation. I agree with you about having wonky signals, for most of my life I ate till absolute fullness so now sometimes I know I'm full and can't eat anymore but I'll still have a feeling of hunger.
Everyone knows the literal ONLY way to lose weight is keto. Duh.
Even the most basic keto calculator suggests a 20% calorie deficit. I hate people that say they eat more than their TDEE and lose weight just because they’re keto. You have to be a dumbass to believe eating over your TDEE could result in losing weight. Just as dumb as the people that don’t believe in CICO.
The admin of the site(writer?) Is telling all the women there to eat no less than 1800Cals. Like how can you just throw a random number out there with out proper information. I believe one commentator said she was 5'3" and 153ish pounds. And he wants her to eat over 1800cals while her tdee says she need about 1700. This is going to make her gain weight back. SMH
Ugh, I went a few rounds with some ketovangelicals yesterday. So frustrating. Keto is not magic. Some people respond very well to that way of eating and thrive on it. Lower carb is provably beneficial for a large group of people to help regulate hormones, insulin, etc., but the reason it works is because it makes it easier to stick to a deficit. The biggest key to success, IMHO, is to find what works for you and your lifestyle, and also to realize that it doesn't always have to be the same. When I was eating out at restaurants daily, OMAD worked best. I recently felt like I needed something more strict, so keto is working for me for now, but I'm fully aware that the only reason it's working so well is because I'm keeping my calories in control.
True, for a lot of people keto works wonderfully and that's brilliant, I've nothing against people eating a keto diet but it's the lying I can't stand. Esspecially people who don't count calories but estimate they're losing weight while eating 4000-5000 a day because it 'feels like a lot of food.'
I have been doing keto for ten weeks and have lost 14 pounds. That doesn't sound terribly impressive, but considering that I actually do have a metabolic disorder that causes me to gain weight on a standard diet of 1000 calories, it is magic to me. However, I know very well that I am an exception. It's not the first eating plan that I would recommend to the average fatty.
For the most part, keto works because of CICO. Most ketoers could have the same results from a standard diet on the same amount of calories.
