Cake

I am angry at this cake
that's it, that's all
I thought, perhaps, if only
two layers, maybe three, standing tall
their yellow hid beneath a fluffy mound
of chocolate whipped cream
 
but it crumbled when I tried to lift it
so I smashed the container
not in a fit of rage, but serenely
after some consideration
I hurled the dome to the floor
to know that I could break it
 
but I hadn't thought of tiny toes
and if the children were shod or not
and now it's too late
and now they'll bleed well
into adulthood
and there are bits of cake everywhere
