Help Me Plan a Poker Road Trip

This summer I'm moving from Chicago to Las Vegas to go live the dream, and I need to take 2 road trips to get our two cars out there. I'd like to stop and play poker each night, but I don't really know what the best places to play poker are, so I'm asking r/poker to help out. Things I'm looking for are (obv) a decent poker room with at least 2/5 NL, a hotel attached or at least close by, and hopefully a discount at the hotel for playing a few hours of poker.

Trip 1 will take the northern route.

Day 1 will be Horseshoe in Council Bluffs, IA.

Day 2 I'm thinking I will be near Denver - what's the best place to play here?

Day 3 I should be rolling into Vegas near midnight, so I'm set at this point.

Trip 2 will be taking the southern route.

Day 1 will be in St. Louis - what's the best place to play here?

Day 2 will probably be Oklahoma, where to play here?

Day 3 will be New Mexico, where to play here?

Thanks in advance.

Oklahoma = Winstar

Is that the one where Jaman plays?

Jaman... Burton? He plays at Hollywood in St. Charles, MO, primarily, unless things have changed very recently.

Ohhh ok

In St. Louis, I prefer Lumiere. You get more business travelers here and 1/2 NL can be profitable.

Oklahoma - where? Assuming you're going to go across I-40?

Oklahoma - where?

Whole state should be reachable from St. Louis in reasonable time, so I'll happily go a bit out of my way for a better poker room. All roads go to Vegas eventually.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I'll let someone who lives/plays there more chime in but in the few times I've played there (Tulsa, south state border, etc.) I haven't noticed a large difference in the rooms - lots of tight reg locals and not a fun atmosphere.

BTW, the Hollywood in Kansas City at the racetrack was a great room. I know that's out of your way but had to throw that in there for the Heartland folks.

They get 2/5 NL at Ameristar a few nights a week, and 5/10 NL one night a week if I'm not mistaken. Other than that, the only consistent > 1/3 game is the 1/2/5 PLO at Lumiere.

If you wanna go out of your way to winstar it is by far the best/biggest/softest casino in oklahoma. Also if it is not a weekend and you get a players card the may give you a free room. Not sure how it works for first time sign ups but i get a free room once every 2 weeks

There is no 1/2 at Lumiere...

Fine, 1/3, whatever they play. There is certainly a low-limit game but it's been two years since I've been back to play there.

Looking at their website, it's 1/3. Same same.

I don't think it's the same, but it's not really worth arguing either. I left town too, I hope your new life is treating you well.

I only ever played as a visitor. Used to be on a sales circuit that had me there regularly. Where'd you end up?

So here is some feedback on playing in St Louis from another player.

I exclusively play at the Lumiere, and they do 1/3 NL and PLO games all day. Occasionally they do 3/5 NL sporadically. They have Turbo tourneys Friday and Saturday night at 7pm that cost $65 to signup. The seats fill up fast though, so I'd advise if you want to signup for the tourney to do so before 6pm.

As for cash games, I'll be blunt. Competition is fierce. I usually see more regs at the tables than fish, and I've been going consistently for the past few months. The best time to play would probably be Friday or Saturday night. Although occasionally I have had semi-decent sessions on Wednesday and Thursday nights.

Regardless, have fun with your trip!

Ameristar in Black Hawk, west of Denver. All the hotels up there are spendy, but weeknights are not bad. In NM, Sandia in Albuquerque has a good selection but they will stop the game at 2am last I was there. PM any other questions if you like.

Denver- the best place to play will be Ameristar in Blackhawk, CO. It’s about 40 minutes west of Denver. Unfortunately in CO there is a state law where the max bet is $100

New Mexico- sandia Casino in Albuquerque basically the only place for quality poker.
