Except all the climate conscious people are also fairly dependent on oil.
So it would look like "change is a comin", then things would pretty much remain the same once all the numbers are crunched.
im not saying 'destroy them all' im saying put all the profits into innovation in sustainable energy, slowly phase out fossil fuels, pivot the business
Right, which is why i threw the "remain the same" in there. The oil companies are throwing billions at renewables trying to stay ahead of demand. They don't care about good or bad for the planet, simply about remaining profitable and expanding. No profit means no renewables.
Climate conscious people would find themselves making the same choice (although for different reasons).

they seem to be doubling down on oil, at least in the short term

I would be a little suspect of vice, the oil industry could certainly be doing more, but they've made this bet before and lost money, investors, whether they're the CEOs of big oil or the guy with a 401k working at VeganWorks don't like losing money more than anything.
Same conclusion as you're article, a little more centered though. https://www.theguardian.com/business/2018/feb/06/bp-aims-to-invest-more-in-renewables-and-clean-energy
