oregonianragerDiegos, can you handle it?•

Regardless, he's found the net at least once. And he has major confidence to finish that shot, nicely too, instead of laying it back off to Diego. Adi is back?

The Big Man looked to be back to his old self. It looks to me like Gio has been coaching him to play more physically and it worked wonders. He seems to be playing a traditional 9, rather than the false 9 thing that Porter had him play. You could still see the remnants in the first couple games (Adi didn't even seem to be a passing option). Everything changed on Saturday. I'm excited for this season.

You can call it a goal if you want - it wasn't. Really clear on replay. Goofy circumstances, easy to miss during play.

It is a goofy circumstance, but the video ref missed a crucial rule here. https://youtu.be/0d9NXJ7exuE?t=196

The ball was played by Boxall and it ricocheted off Valeri towards Adi. Whether Adi was offside by his big toe or not, the ball was played by Boxall. It really looks to me like Valeri is trying to stop and avoid cleating Boxall, it was not a deliberate pass.

If they are going to retract a goal after ~4 minutes of video review, at least get it right.

The call was that it didn't "ricochet off" Valeri, but that Valeri played it purposefully toward Adi.

It looks a lot like stupidly good luck that the exchange produces an accidental and perfectly weighted pass to Adi. I don’t see how Valeri could have made that happen on purpose.

However it is very clearly the ideal outcome (give or take a toe) and St. Valeri is very tricky, so who knows?

Even if intent mattered there’s no way to call the play that doesn’t look wrong from some point of view. Since it doesn’t, offside is correct.

We got the three points, I’m content.

There was no mention of Boxall playing it. I think the ref missed it.

Don't listen to the announcers on those, for an offensive player it doesn't matter if the touch is a 'deliberate one'. The deliberate touch or deflection applies to a defender touching a pass from the attacking team. Last touch is from your team mate you are offside period.

I agree that this was offside. But I don't believe you are correct about the rule.

Yup. Inclined to agree honestly.

To me, in the moment it was absolutely questionable - looking at the replay, especially slow-motion, it definitely appears that it was Valeri's intent to pass the ball to Adi. The actual execution came off more of a ricochet, but there was a definite attempt, and contact was made - thus offside.

What's bad is, I'm pretty sure that if Valeri hadn't touched it at all, it would have still gone to Adi - and Adi wouldn't have been offside then!

I looked up flights to Portland and they're not bad and I'm very tempted
