Friday, February 26, 1999

  • 12:55-2:15PM: 4th Period School Assembly - Adnan skips

  • According to Sharon Watts, Adnan skipped the 4th Period Assembly

  • Detectives:

  • AT&T SUBPOENA #3: for Yaser's Cell Phone Records. Did they subpoena this number without knowing it belonged to Yaser?

  • Re-File for a corrected subpoena for Adnan and Hae's school records

  • Discover that it is unlikely they will be able to match soil found in Adnan's home to soil at the burial site.

  • 7PM: Ritz & McGillvary interview Adnan at his home.

  • Mr. Rahman is present.

  • This is the first time Adnan is interviewed in person by any detective, Missing Persons or Homicide. Don was interviewed multiple times, in person, and on the phone.

  • According to Tanveer, Adnan and his mother argue all night after this interview.

  • MacGillivary and Carew arrive at Jen's home.

  • According to MacGillivary's trial testimony, detectives "ran into Jen and Kristi out front." Detectives asked why there would be calls from Adnan Syed to Jen's house. Jen said she didn't know, maybe a friend was at her house, but she couldn't offer an explanation. Jen agrees to come down to the station.

  • According to trial testimony, Jen is angry with Jay from this date forward. She does not speak to him again until sometime after March 15.

  • According to Serial, Jen tells Jay that the police questioned her and Jay says, "Send them to me."

  • Police make a note of Jay's name and address. This may be the first time the police became aware of Jay, as they only have the name of his parents, so far, from the call log.

  • Jen says Nicole told her that Hae had been strangled. This fact has not yet been made public.

  • According to Sis, Jay was scheduled to work at Southwestern Video, but, for the second time, he missed work because he was being interviewed at Baltimore City Police Headquarters.

Saturday, February 27, 1999

  • Detectives:

  • AT&T SUBPOENA #3: Faxed to AT&T at 7:24AM, requesting Yaser's Cell Phone Records. (Hard copy mailed.) Still unclear if detectives knew it was Yaser's number.

  • BELL ATLANTIC SUBPOENA #2: Hand delivered seeking Adnan's HOME phone records.

  • BELL ATLANTIC SUBPOENA #3: Hand delivered seeking the owner of [Phil's] phone number. This subpoena specified the wrong area code.

  • Sgt. Steven Lehman asks Transit Authority to check all Park n Ride lots for Hae's Nissan.

  • 1PM: Jen interviewed at her attorney's home. Jen's mother and attorney are present. Screen shot of audiotape

  • 3:45-5:15PM Jen interviewed at the police station. Jen's attorney and mother are present.

  • Forrester reviews the case file in advance of an arrest. Before Jay's interview?

  • 9:15PM: Jay clocks out Drug Emporium

  • 11PM Approximate: Adnan, Becky, Aisha and Sean are at Krista's for a couple of hours, listening to music.

  • Krista says Adnan left her house at about 1AM, and that is the last time she saw Adnan outside of prison walls.

  • Midnight: Who dropped Jay off at work and when? Options:

  • Jay's explanation of rights form was signed at 12:30AM. So the police had to be at Jay's work by at least midnight. It's 15-30 minutes from Jay's work to the police department.

  • Police report indicates that Jay was picked up at Southwest Video at 11:30PM

  • In Stephanie's police interview, she says she dropped Jay off at work, and called him later, and he wasn't there.

  • Jay's workplace was thirty minutes from Krista's house. If Adnan dropped Jay off at 11:15PM, he wouldn't have been at Krista's until 11:45PM. Krista says Adnan was at her house from 11PM-1AM.

  • Rabia says Adnan dropped Jay off at work, the night before Adnan was arrested, contradicting Krista.

  • Josh says that he was at work with Jay that night, and that Jay was so scared he called Josh to come in while he waited for the police. Josh said that Jay admitted to burying a body, and said that he was the one who called the police to come get him.

  • According to "Sis," Jay was not scheduled to work on this night.

Monday, March 1, 1999

  • Bail Hearing:

  • Ritz drives ASA Cohen to bail hearing. Progress Report.

  • 9AM: Bail Hearing. Defense Attorneys Douglas Colbert and Chris Flohr request bail be set at $25,000 for Adnan. (Per Hargrove's 3-9-1999 Opinion.)

  • 250 family, friends, track coach, mosque community attended bail hearing

  • Bail denied by Judge John Hargrove.

  • After the bail hearing:

  • Adnan meets with his defense attorneys, including Chris Flohr.

  • Flohr's Notes:

  • Adnan filled his attorneys in on his history, his achievements, and all the things the police said during his interrogation, trying intimidate him.

  • Adnan said he and Hae had not written notes since they broke up, that they had not written notes for a long time, and that there was no indication of violence in any of the notes.

  • Adnan's passport is probably expired.

  • Parents are Shamim and Syed, brothers are Tanver and Yusuf.

  • Bilal is the Sunday School Leader.

  • Adnan is in 12th grade in the top 10 percent of his class, he's an EMT (since the age of 16) and works for Rural MetroCorp.

  • Adnan plays football/defense and track, and two weeks ago he started tutoring at Woodlawn Middle School.

  • Adnan volunteers at PAL Recreation and helps kids 5-10 with their homework.

  • Adnan is on the National Honor Society and got the highest grade in his EMT class.

  • Adnan is waiting for letters from UMBC and College Park that should arrive in April. He is interested in pre-med, ER med. (According to Tanveer, Adnan had already been accepted to College Park.)

  • Adnan had first period with Ms. Muse, second period is English and Social studies, and that during his interrogation, police wrote down what classes and times, and that Adnan and Hae had 2nd and 4th period together.

  • Police Officers said that they knew Adnan solicited someone to help, and that it must eat him up inside to have seen Hae in a hole.

  • Adnan told the police he didn't want to talk about it, and went to call Bilal, the the police said more things.

  • Police said fingerprints were all over Hae's Nissan. Nothing was said about blood or DNA.

  • Police officers said Adnan was wearing red gloves.

  • Police mentioned Jay Wilds and Stephanie, and said, "Why would you trust a black guy who puts pins in his mouth."

  • 4PM: Flohr makes calls to get a tape of the bail hearing.

  • Asia:

  • 7:45-9:10AM: Asia in first period class.

  • (8AM Approx: Krista, Laura and Becky are in the principal's office, saying they need to talk to the police because they have arrested the wrong guy.)

  • 9:20AM: Asia's Second Period Class, taught by Mr. Parker: True/False? Asia tells Mr. Parker that she has already been to Adnan's house with Justin. (Asia's second letter)

  • 10:40AM: Mr. Parker's Second Period Class ends. Asia out of school for the day. True/False? Asia calls Woodlawn Public Library, and confirms they have surveillance cameras (Asia's first letter)

  • True/False? WHS issues a newsletter re: the arrest, but they do not use Adnan’s name. (Asia's second letter)

  • Exact time unknown: Family, friends, mosque members, Justin A. and Asia gather at Adnan's home.

  • “Late” Asia writes first letter to Adnan: Asia writes that she just came from Adnan's home, she is at her own home now, and it is late.

  • Investigation:

  • BELL ATLANTIC SUBPOENA #4 Seeking four phone numbers called from Adnan's cell phone.

  • It looks like police created this list, but didn't realize they already knew Stephanie's private line, Peter's home, and Yaser's home. They have had Yaser's home number since the anonymous call on February 12. This is the second time they have subpoenaed Bell Atlantic to ID Yaser's home number. They still don't know?

  • These four phone numbers were subpoenaed on February 18, and subscriber information was supplied. It's unclear why they subpoenaed these four numbers again. It seems they don't know who owns [Yaser's] cell phone number or [Jen's] pager number. It looks liked detectives have forgotten or misplaced the information regarding these four numbers.

  • Police have transposed the actual number dialed (6400) to (4600).

  • Police know that Nisha's number belongs to someone called "M. Nisha." We don't know how they know this.

  • To Do List including subpoening the correct provider for Jen's pager (PennSel) to determine the owner of 390-0384.

  • 2PM: Detectives Ritz, MacGillvary, and Carew interview Krista at work (Insurance) for about an hour and a half.

  • Audiotapes of Jay and Jen's interviews logged in to property

  • Press:

  • Baltimore Sun reports Adnan arrested. Clip of Baltimore County front page. Could be from the day before.

  • Hae's mother and brother interviewed by the WMAR-ABC

  • WMAR-ABC Reports on Adnan's Arrest.

  • Stephanie/Jay:

  • Stephanie is at Jay's house. Jay tells Stephanie that Adnan killed Hae.

  • 7PM: Girls Basketball Tournament: Woodlawn vs. Kenwood. Coach Dave Schreiner asks the girls, "I can't believe that Adnan wouldn't have told someone."

  • Stephanie's mom shows up because TV broadcasters were trying to reach Stephanie at home.

  • Stephanie calls Jay to see if he needs a ride home.

  • Adnan:

  • Moved from Section A, Cell 123, Floor B to> Section L, Cell 120, Floor B to> Section A, Cell 001 on Floor B of the Baltimore City Detention Center.

Tuesday, March 2, 1999

  • Defense:

  • Did they tell Adnan that Asia was at their house the night before, and had seen him in the library on January 13?

  • Did the Rahmans tell Colbert that Asia was at their house the night before, and had seen Adnan in the library on January 13?

  • Flohr hires and meets with Defense Private Investigator Andrew "Drew" Davis. They talk for three hours. Davis invoice.

  • Flohr Notes:

  • Flohr calls to get the bail hearing tapes/transcript.

  • Flohr calls Baltimore Private Investigator Frank Napfel.

  • Undated note re; letter to write to Rahmans about sharing privileged information. Flohr wants to make sure the Rahmans are not giving away information.

  • Asia:

  • 7:30AM: Asia arrives at school? She's mailed the letter she wrote "late" the night before?

  • 7:45-9:10AM: Asia in her first period class.

  • 9:20AM: Asia's Second Period Starts. Asia is in Mrs. Ogle’s CIP Class: Asia writes second letter.

  • According to Asia, Stacie says she thinks that Adnan did it because she heard about fibers on Hae’s body.

  • Asia writes that she has to go to third period.

  • 10:40AM: Second Period CIS Class ends. Asia out of school for the day. (Asia didn't have a third period class)

  • Investigation:

  • Detectives at Baltimore County Precinct. Interview: 11:05AM: Aisha (Cover Sheet Only) || 12:35PM: Ann (Cover Sheet Only) || 1:30PM: Debbie (Cover Sheet Only)

  • Undated police notes after interviewing Aisha and Debbie. Aisha, Debbie and Ann told detectives that: Adnan had stayed at Aisha's after learning that Hae was dead, none of Hae's girlfriends liked the new boyfriend, Becky had a party in September, Aisha received death threats her junior year, Debbie and Aisha had strep throat... and more.

  • AT&T SUBPOENA #3: Re-faxed to follow up on the request for Yaser's cell phone records.

  • Ritz writes that he has spoken to "Chris" about this but Chris cannot find his subpoena. This is likely because "Chris" was the contact at Bell Atlantic, not AT&T.

  • It's still unclear if police knew that Yaser was the owner of the AT&T cell phone number they were subpoenaing.

  • In this Re-Fax, Ritz asks Deanna Bache for a tower site map for the January 12th and 13the calls made from Adnan's phone (in addition to Yaser's cell phone records). (This despite Rose having sent the cell tower addresses on February 22.) This page of the fax if referred to as "The Deanna Note."

  • SUBPOENA (WHS) approved for Adan and Hae's School Records.

  • SUBPOENA (Coppin College) for Mr. S's work records that were already sent on February 23.

  • Jay:

  • 2:05-9:30PM: Jay works second job: Drug Emporium. Jay reprimanded for failing to fill out his "void sheet" on February 28.

Wednesday, March 3, 1999

  • Defense:

  • 9-10:30AM: Defense Private Investigator, Andrew "Drew" Davis, meets with Mr. Rahman, Chris Flohr and Douglas Colbert. Davis invoice.

  • 11:30AM Approx: Davis checks out the Woodlawn Public Library, interviews the Library Security Guard, Wackenhut Officer Steve Mills. Davis asks about video tape. (Mills testified at the February 2016 PCR hearing.)

  • Colin Miller's deception re: Davis's visit to the library

  • Davis interviews Coach Sye: Davis asks Sye if he remembers a conversation with Adnan on January 13th. Davis tells Sye that Adnan remembers the conversation was on the 13th, and remembers the conversation was about Ramadan. Sye remembers the conversation, but does not remember if it was the 13th. (Later, Sye would say that Davis, "popped out at me.")

  • Andrew Davis tours Leakin Park.

  • Chris Flohr Notes:

  • Flohr meets with Adnan.

  • 11:45AM: Flohr calls Bilal.

  • 11:50AM: Flohr calls Andrew Davis.

  • 12:17PM: Flohr calls and pages Bilal three more times.

  • Flohr calls Baltimore Defense Attorney Gary Christopher.

  • Flohr calls Baltimore Private Investigator Frank Napfel.

  • Flohr writes that "Jerry notes" State Psychologist (psychiatrist?) Dr. Spodek can be hired for $1,000 and Ellen McDaniel is a "good psych, very conservative, and judges like her.”

  • Investigation:

  • Detectives meet with ASA Vicki Wash and determine to obtain a warrant for Adnan's Honda.

  • Detectives begin typing up the search and seizure warrant for Adnan's Honda.

  • Detectives deliver a subpoena to Bell Atlantic for subscriber information. Progress Report doesn't say which one.

  • Detectives called Jen to schedule an interview at Woodlawn Police Department.

  • Report

  • Rural Metro HR Manager speaks to HR Assistant who approved hiring Adnan. Assistant says that she handled Adnan's orientation, did not check his references, and that he probably did not fill out an application. The assistant said that "everyone knew Adnan was 17."

Thursday, March 4, 1999

  • Defense:

  • 7:55AM. Chris Flohr sends a fax to the prison to get Adnan his first meeting with Defense Private Investigator Andrew "Drew" Davis. (Flohr's call log for the rest of this day is missing from the defense file.)

  • Davis meets with Adnan for five hours.

  • Davis reviews his track and library findings with Adnan. This is when the Nisha call would have come up, as an alibi. Davis invoice.

  • Flohr Notes:

  • There is talk of a passport, an email address that Hae set up, a password, and that Bilal is like a cousin, but is not family.

  • Flohr wants to get the name of Hae's current boyfriend.

  • The last email exchange between Adnan and Hae was that they would be friends.

  • Flohr listens to tape of the bail hearing, and writes that the ASA said that they have a witness who heard Adnan say he was going to kill Hae, and was with Adnan when he buried Hae.

  • Investigation:

  • Detectives deliver subpoena for Adnan and Hae's school records.

  • Detectives interview Jennifer Pusateri at the state's attorneys office in the presence of her attorney.

  • WHS Girls Basketball Team loses to Millford Mill

  • Jay came to the game. While talking to Stephanie, Jay told Dave Schreiner, "We are having a conversation here."

  • Memo: Adnan's supervisor Omar apologizes to the Regional President of Rural Metro for not knowing that Adnan was 17, and did not meet minimum age requirements.

  • Defense:

  • Flohr Notes:

  • Flohr speaks with Adnan - on the phone?

  • Notes from conversation include: Address of jail, writing letters, how mail scrutinized, self-addressed stamped envelope and one piece paper.

  • Adnan has asked for paper and envelopes and asked how the mail is "scrutinized."

  • Notes reference Nisha (...at a time when police think this phone number belongs to someone named "M. Nisha." Police still don't know her significance.)

  • Note re: "History of Hae”

  • Note re; School records/guidance counsellor; and Date of Birth issue.

  • Adnan tells Flohr about the service for Hae on March 11. Adnan is supposed to be the first person to speak.

  • Adnan says that about 2-3 weeks after Hae's disappearance, Ms. Stuckey warned him to be careful and told him he would be questioned, and told him to to think before he speaks.

  • Adnan says that the principal gave him similar advice, and that the principal told him that he would be present if the police wanted to question Adnan.

  • Adnan says he didn't do his English assignment when he and Hae broke up, and Ms. Stuckey said it's okay, relationships happen.

  • Adnan said that he would write letters from his mom to the school saying he had doctors appointments and that his mom knew he forged documents.

  • Adnan says he never told anyone he was born in 1980. And the people at the jail questioned him on that.

  • Adnan says that Ms. Schab had a lot to do with the break-up, and that Don's car also had a lot to do with the breakup because Hae is shallow and would brag about her boyfriend's cars.

  • Adnan says that Hae's best friends are Aisha and Debbie and that Hae had a boyfriend who died in a car crash. Adnan also tells Flohr about Hae's friend from Georgia (Jake) who died of cancer.

  • Adnan tells Flohr that Hae lived in California in the 9th grade.

  • To do list includes: Glasses, 4 envelopes, legal research.

  • 2:15PM: Flohr calls Davis and tells him not to contact Hae's family, and that the attorneys have a plan for that.

  • Davis off on Saturday?

  • Jay:

  • noon-8PM: Jay works Drug Emporium

  • According to Sis, after Jay was interviewed "several times" by police, she asked Jay if police were questioning him about the "girl found in the park." According to Sis, Jay said yes, and that "No one thinks he [Adnan] did it, but he did kill her."

  • According to Sis, after Jay was interviewed by police on March 5, he told Sis that he would not be missing any more work until it goes to court.
