Flames of the past

During a saunter in the abnormaly warm fall air

And amidst the trees that faintly glow from the residual summer's heat

She and I talk and laugh without a care

And listen to the crackling of the leaves beneath our feet

The setting sun sets her hair alight in autumn fire

And I bask within the light of its auburn flames

Within the glint of her amber eyes lies misery's pyre

Into which we also cast our names

I could live forever dancing amongst the forest's embers

While we lose ourselves in a soft and gentle breeze

Surrendering to-

I awake in a drunken haze

I feel cold

I reach for what I think silhouette next to me but touch only air.

And am suddenly overtaken with searing pain

I furiously grab for the bottle of bourbon on the bedside table

And nearly jump at the the sound of it crashing to the floor

I am hit with a rush of cold air as I stagger into the darkend hallway

I struggle to navigate through my cluttered house

Careful not to step on the broken picture frames that littler the floor

As I am about to turn into the kitchen, I fall

I look up to find myself face to face with that hellish urn

My blood begins to boil as I am overcome by smoldering rage

I hurl my bottle at the mantle and scream

I go about the room, breaking and destroying everything I can see.

I make my way to the fireplace and hold the urn in my hands

With one final burst of anger, I smash the damn thing on the ground

A thick plume of ash flies upwards as shards of broken glass spread out across the room

In the dim light of early morning, I see her face within whirling cloud of dust

I come to my senses and fall to my knees

I pant heavily as tears blur my eyes

I crawl to the pile of ash and glass shards hold some of it tightly in my hand

I hold it even tighter as small drops of blood make their way through my fist

For what feels like hours I lie upon the frigid floor shaking with pathetic sobs

Caked in ash, I get up and stumble to my room in a daze

As I approach my bed, I pause

Illuminated by the light of rising summer sun, I see a new flame

An orange pill bottle burns like the embers from long ago

I take the bottle in my hands and stare at it for some time

With a weak smile, I swallow it's contents

And soon my mind begins to fade--

As I am engulfed by the morning conflagration

I am reminded of her amber eyes agleam

The image fills me with boundless elation

As I sink into a pleasant summer's dream
