New Podcast Idea: The ReListenables

Who else would be down for a music version of their ReWatchables (although only if they can get guests who can talk music, which I think Chris Ryan could potentially do, Bill actually seems to be very weak at talking music, but he'd be good as a side character on such a show) where they break down classic albums from various eras and various genres.

So many ways they could take this. Certainly is some musician who was big in the 70s or 80s in LA who may want a chance to host a podcast like this. Especially one who would have great stories from their era. On Beats 1 radio they have people like Mike D, Q Tip, Elton John, Frank Ocean who all have weekly radio shows, can adopt that model to more fun discussion Ringer style podcasting.

The ideas cool but.. it would just be all them east coast white communications / journalism graduates talking about "how dope the chronic was when I was 5".. So na.. I can't really do them on anything but NBA.

Music is too subjective, people like Rewatchables when it's a movie they also like or are familiar with. When you get into Chris Ryan talking about Fugazi or some obscure ish 90s hip hop or something, it's not going to do numbers or be that fun to listen to in my opinion

There's actually a podcast called "The Great Albums" podcast. It's pretty much this concept. It's good. It's very rock centric though.

I’m sick of white people telling me how to listen to hip hop. If the pod isn’t all white people i might be down

Jesus dude...Fuck no. We'd end up with a pod where Andy Greenwald claims Fallout Boy is the last great American rock band cause they're willing to go big or some other totally stupid shit he used to say on the pod with Chris when they talked more about music in the Grantland days.

They did a segment on The Killers every time they released a new album. Their taste in music they covered was and remains terrible.

And this is about to lead me on a side tangent: Music journalism is fucked because of the internet. Back in the day, it used to be the lane was to to introduce people to obscure good shit. Now, music journalism is centered on the most clicks you can get, so we all have to pretend someone like Beyonce (who disclaimer is very talented for a pop star) is the same as someone who writes and produces their own shit because Beyonce is popular af and indie musicians are not. So we get endless think pieces on the artistic merit of music that is literally designed to appeal to the widest audience possible. Music critics essentially just serve to uphold the status quo instead of trying to upend it by arguing for shit that's off the beaten path.

So yeah...I'm not really here for this idea. Because I don't need the Taylor Swift 1989 episode followed by Beyonce Lemonade episode followed by Bill talking about Pearl Jam's Ten or a Tupac album. It would end up mostly being Chris Ryan pretending he liked the shit his coworkers were stomping for just waiting for the episode where he and Fennessey could talk about the 90s indie music scene.

Beyond that, and this is the biggest problem with the idea: copyright issues makes your ability to play cuts of music without securing and paying for rights first VERY limited in a podcast format. They could probably afford livestreaming episodes where they play longer or full cuts of songs, but as a podcast, the idea is hampered because its simply cost prohibitive.
