Still Walking
My back’s splintered
from leaning over
to pick up organs
that fall from my mouth
--
My throat is sore
from shoving the rotting
flesh back down
my bruised esophagus
--
Sometimes I wonder
which organs I
could leave behind
and survive without
--
Last week, on my way to work
I retched up my lungs
and I didn’t lean over
to pick them back up
off the cold pavement
like the times before
--
Surely, someone needs them more than me
--
Yesterday, I coughed up
my cardiac muscle
and I didn’t stop walking
down the aisle
like the times before
--
Surely, someone could use it more than me
--
I've tried to replace them with other
similar lumps of flesh but my body
never accepts the transplant
--
I gave up years ago
My chest cavity is hollow
My ribs protect nothing
but my outward appearance
