When are you guys going to stop resisting the only morally correct language to be ever typed onto?

  • Unsafe code kills

  • Unsafe code oppresses.

  • Unsafe code is holding back human progress.

Call your representative. It is the time to be on the right side of history. Call your representative and start pushing for the unsafe tax. If corporations want to gamble with our lives and safety, it is better for them to pay for it.

It is not 1992 anymore... We have rights now... We have borrow checkers... We have paradigms that could be used to reengineer the foundations of our very society. There's no place in this world for C++, Pascal, Java, or the most blasphemous and offensive representation of code information: C.

Don't aim for safety, aim for speed of development.

Of course 7-zip is much older than Rust so that's just a thought experiment.

How about we... RIIR?

The binary formats, the library, and core CLI functionality should be doable in Rust.

For the GUI part, we need a language that has a GUI component library that interchangeably abstracts native WinAPI, Carbon, Cocoa, GTK1, GTK2, GTK3, QT4, QT5 and more, and has an IDE written using that library which can then itself be built against/in any of the underlying GUI frameworks allowing it to run on every platform and be used to build applications that can be seamlessly cross-compiled from any of them to any of the others. Obviously, only Free Pascal meets these uncompromisable requirements. So it must be used for the GUI part of the rewrite at least, or maybe for the whole rewrite since it's capable of being very low-level/very high-level/entirely procedural/entirely OOP/anything in between in a completely seamlessly interchangeable way depending on your needs that not many other languages are.

Couldn't have said it better myself! Wait...

I mean, everything there that's a me-quote is completely true. It's not like I make stuff up.

Thought expirement to try at home, whenever something fails start preaching about rust.

If my life was written in Rust it would have never compiled!

If you follow C++14 core guidelines, the defect described would not have occurred. [...] Honestly guys get over rust, it does not offer a single advantage in real-life programming scenarios.

can't tell if jerk

Next day edit:

You don't have to read them. The compiler will enforce them.

He is jerking.... hopefully.

Technically if all languages are Turing complete, and you can implement a language in another language, you can Implement any "functionality" from another language into another. Ergo, rusts supposed "safety" can be added by a third party or yourself in a project.

Except Python 3.

Ok, fine, any meaningful Language for a given project.

You mean Excel spreadsheets aren't a meaningful language? /s

C++14 is pretty nice though, jerking aside. 17 is significantly better though

Are the full guidelines available somewhere? The core guidelines print to a short 368 page pdf file. I feel it's too good to be true. There must be more guidelines to follow out there.

If you follow the C /C++ specifications, and avoid all cases of undefined behavior, the defect described would not have occurred. It's not that hard people.

Every line of code is a vector of vulnerability. The only winning move is not to play rewrite in rust. Or Haskell, if you're into that whole "functional" thing.

terserterseness•

Did anyone make Ruskell yet? All the superiority of Haskell with the greatness of Rust?

When you Google Haskell and Rust, you see many people are confused which of the two to use. And looking at this https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=14550606 I think Ruskell would be a winner.

Nowadays when that sort of bug is discovered, the question that naturally comes to my mind is "would that have happened if the software were implemented by me"? In that case it looks like the answer is no.

It's just a matter of having the right tool for the job. In this case, the tool is programming and the solution is Rust
