Just a poem about my dad
Eyes so small,
but fast,
quick to glisten, glimmer
or roll
Now dazed and muddied and opaque and opiated
Now slow and dodging, their setting old, old never to return
That old smirk now bears no confidence
Swift mind’s outpourings of product now bereft of action
Man stronger than I now too weak to stand
or sit
All those memories now only held by one
If that
I try to speak but find no answer
This the time I’d thought for farewell and confessions,
Long foreseen end now here too soon
Take us by surprise
One last one
Dying for years and dead in a day
I longed for answer, a look of recognition, a last love you or even insult. But
you were already gone.
