Guide to "double-dipping" CSR and CSP with Chase.

Faqs

This is a guide I've put together over several months as I've helped friends and people on here with the Chase double dip for CSR and CSP.

As one pre-note, this guide can strictly speaking be used as a reference for doing any two personal Chase cards in one day (for example, someone wanting to combine pulls for two applications or leapfrogging from 4/24 to 6/24 by getting two cards at once). However, some of those other scenarios are less time-sensitive and/or easier than double dip so this guide is too much information for those. This is most useful for what it's specifically written for.

Edit: one more pre-note: per other users this can also be effectively used for the two personal Southwest cards.

#What is the double dip, and why?

"Double dipping" is applying for both cards on the same day (with a possible exception discussed later). This is done to circumvent a certain rule Chase has.

In 2017 Chase instituted a new restriction we affectionately begrudgingly call the "One Sapphire" rule. This is a section of the offer terms for applications for CSR and CSP that states:

The product is not available to either (i) current cardmembers of any Sapphire credit card, or (ii) previous cardmembers of any Sapphire credit card who received a new cardmember bonus within the last 24 months.

So if you currently hold a Sapphire-family card OR if you've gotten a bonus on any Sapphire-family card in the last 24 months, you cannot get approved for a new application for a Sapphire-family card.

The three Sapphire-family cards are the CSP (Chase Sapphire Preferred), the no-fee CS (Chase Sapphire), and the CSR (Chase Sapphire Reserve)

As an example of this rule, if you apply for a CSP and get approved and a month later apply for the CSR, your application won't go through because you would be a current Sapphire holder. If you apply a year later, it still won't go through. If you currently hold a CSP that you got the bonus on 3 years ago, an application for CSR still won't go through!

To get around this, you can "double dip." You apply for the CSR and CSP on the same day (more specific instructions below). When you're approved for the first one, Chase's system doesn't immediately tag you as a current Sapphire cardholder and so you can get the second. That's the synopsis.

#Pre-application instructions: make sure you're not going to run afoul of the One Sapphire rule, 5/24, and 2/30

  1. Do you currently have a CSR, CSP, or CS?
  2. Have you received a signup bonus on a CSR, CSP, or CS in the last 24 months? Note this is receiving the signup bonus, not when you applied for the card. If you applied for a card in month X of a year, and got the bonus in month X+2, you'd want to be 24 months since X+2.
  3. Are you at 5/24 or higher? (That's 5 cards or more shown on your personal credit report as opened in the last 24 months.)
  4. Have you applied for any Chase cards in the last 30 days? (Chase limits you to 2 applications in 30 days so if you're already at 1 or 2 you can't get two cards approved.)

If the answer to any of those questions is "yes" you cannot currently double dip. The easiest one to fix is the first one. If you currently hold one/more of the cards but the other two questions can be answered with "no" then you just simply downgrade the card(s) to a Freedom or Freedom Unlimited. The others can be fixed also; it just requires time.

If/when the answer to all of those questions is "no", you're good to proceed.

Note: the above are only the absolute requirements One Sapphire and 5/24-wise to be eligible to be approved. You might not want to continue if other credit factors might make you not get approved, and/or if you are worried about the risk of Chase shutdown. YMMV, continue at your own risk, etc, etc etc.

#Application instructions

Apply for the one you want more in the morning on a non-holiday weekday. You do the one you want first in case you don't get approved for both. Personally I think the CSR is more value than CSP, so I'd prioritize that one. However, you can do either one first. Non-holiday weekday is best in case you need to talk to a representative to get the card(s) approved.

Hopefully it's approved right away. If not, you call a certain number (more on that below) to get it approved.

Once the first one is approved, you apply for the second one, and hopefully it's approved either automatically or through the same number.

Use incognito/private mode in your browser when you apply as sometimes the first application can mess up the second application if done in the same browser/session. Myself and others have had the second application of a day not be received because the same browser was used back to back! Using incognito mode makes sure that doesn't happen.

So:

First application in incognito mode, get approved immediately in the browser, or call recon. At some point, close the browser to clear everything.

When you're ready for second card, open new incognito window and apply.

#Reminder: use referral links when you apply!

Maybe your SO has one for one of the cards, or a friend. If not, please consider using a link(s) from the subreddit referral threads. It's the same offer for you and someone else gets some points as well!

If you're using referral link(s) for one or both applications, just copy/paste the link you want into your Incognito browser session, or find your link and right-click to "open in Incognito."

#Approval/reconsideration:

If not immediately approved, you can call the status line here: 1-800-432-3117. The order of buttons to press to get status is: #, 3, 1

This flowchart will tell you more about what you hear from the status line.

If not immediately approved, this number can get you to a real person who can process the application right away so you can hopefully get approved same-day: 1-888-270-2127.

(Feel free to Google both those numbers to make sure they're good and I'm not sending you to some fake/phishing number.)

If you have to recon for the second card and they mention the just-approved first one, just ask them to process for approval anyway. Don't talk about the bonus or the rule or anything like that, and if they bring it up just ignore the bonus talk and mention you want to try and get the card to split expenses/etc. They have the ability to approve a second card. Multiple DPs show it's possible to recon the second card, so just ignore anything related to the bonus. If you get approved for the second card, you will get the bonus regardless of what a recon rep might say.

If the second card is a hard denial even after multiple recon calls, you could apply for Freedom or Freedom Unlimited that day for the (hopefully) combined pull, with probably a higher chance of approval. But definitely try CSR/CSP before CSR|CSP and F|FU.

#A possible exception to applying on the same day There have been some DPs where someone applied for CSR and CSP on two different days and still got approved for both. It seems that if the first card is approved on a different day than application day, you can apply for the second card on the approval day and still get approved. Here is a collection of a few DPs.

For example, someone applies for CSR on Tuesday. It goes pending and they don't call recon. The card is approved on Thursday. They can apply for the CSP on Thursday and potentially still get approved.

Doing this results in extra hard pull(s) because the CSR/CSP pulls are not combined like they would be with same-day-application. This is also really pushing things so it's not advisable. Best to apply for and get approved for both cards at once.

#Approval odds (ish)

A good barometer for the odds of the second application is how much credit line you get approved for with CSR (assuming that's the one you apply for first). The minimum they give for that credit card is $10k. If you get approved for exactly 10k, that's probably not a great sign for getting another card right away, because it means their algorithms are saying they're trusting you with a baseline level of credit. If they give you $15k or $20k or whatever, you have much better chances of getting a second card, because you can call the reconsideration number and tell them "Hey, can I move $3k (or however much) off this other card to get approved for the card that is pending?"

CSP is $5k minimum line so if you get $15k with CSR you have good chances for CSP. They still have other criteria, but that gives you $5k "extra" on top of your CSR credit limit to bargain with.

When the CSR first launched I did a survey of peoples' application experiences. We got several thousand datapoints! Here is the document. You can see approval odds by 5/24 status, income, and credit score range (or some combination thereof). Look at the "Data Analysis" and "Pivot by Category" tabs.

The data is almost 2 years old at this point but their approval considerations are probably still similar - if not the same - for the CSR. CSP is probably easier to get approved for in terms of income and credit range (not 5/24 status).

#In conclusion

The double dip is a potent way to get 100k bonus UR (plus 8k+ from spending and 5k from CSP AU if you add one). It takes a bit of preparation and deliberate moves but the payoff is worth it!
