Poverty is a plague. Some people in 3rd world countries are desperate for ways to make money to survive. It's not always black and white. What's the life of an elephant if you can eat for a year off what you make poaching. I love wildlife, but try to see why someone would do something so past my comprehension

Because the elephant hunter had a permit and the elephant fed an entire village. That wasn’t justice. It was tragic. Two kids lost their father.

So whats the difference. A rich guy comes from the western world and pays money to kill an elephant for fun.
A local poor guy kills an elephant to get money.
The difference is that the poor guy doesnt kill for fun.

Except that the hunter payed thousands of dollars to legally shoot that animal. Money that goes back into the economy. The animal feeds the local tribes AND the poor. Those permits target a specific animal in many cases or cull an overpopulated herd. The poacher doesn’t give a shit what animal he kills and kills an endangered animal and can bring it to extinction. Poor guy can get a job or start a business. There are always legal options if one looks hard enough.
It’s hard, but not impossible to find legal work. Killing endangered or protected wildlife to make a quick buck and fueling a black market is disgusting and empowers people who are far richer than a man who legally shot an elephant.

You're failing to take into account the economic and social and environmental impacts that poaching has on countries and animal populations. At the end of the day, as cruel as it may sound, some lives are worth more than others. This is one of those cases.

You absolutely have a choice. I couldn’t get a job anywhere so I started a business. I can now afford to feed myself, my husband and my pets. There is always a way. Stop making excuses for people who are knowingly killing and extorting limited resources. The people who do this don’t give a shit about finding a stable job. They care about finding quick large amounts of money. Jail won’t fix them because history has shown it doesn’t. Warning them is letting them off the hook to go do it again.
Poaching isn’t a small 3 oz weed job. It’s killing endangered species to make a quick buck. It’s breaking important laws to get quick money. These people have other options and they choose to poach. They’re not some kids who got caught with a little weed. Stop making excuses for bad people.
