Bystander

Watch your step

over this cracked sidewalk

uneven and tangled in

thick pulsing arteries

Someone keeps

stomping on them and

now the cracks surge

with blood, fresh

-ly squeezed heartbreak

congealing in midjuly heat

Still, watch as the crushed

arteries expand and

contract

gently pushing a-

part this side

walk

keep on

walking

You were only

a pair of shoes

in a crowd, right?
