Spotify sounds bad on Google Home and Chromecast

It started a couple of months ago, or maybe I only noticed it a couple of months ago. It sounds like the songs are being played at a very low bitrate, the treble region of songs are affected the most. It sounds very compressed. A Google representative told me that the Google devices stream at 256kbps, which is low but is decent enough to be enjoyable. I changed the settings on my phone to 256kbps to see how they would sound, and to my surprise, they sounded quite decent - leading me to believe that the Google devices are actually not streaming at 256kbps, more like 96kbps. This is not an exaggeration. I've tried it with my friends' devices too, and it is the same. Tidal works properly even at its lowest quality setting, so I think this is an issue with the Spotify integration with Google devices.
