Good beginner handgun for under $1000?

I am looking to purchase my first pistol/handgun and I am not sure where to start. I've asked some friends and family and everyone's opinion is different (obviously).

Some of the legitimate recommendations I am considering are the SIG P229 and the Glock 19. I know the SIG is quite expensive, so I am looking for a gun that will preferably be under $1000 with all starting supplies included.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a beginner like me?
