Friend is homeless, feel conflicted
This is a late night post because it’s been occupying my mind lately and I feel bad but I don’t know what to do. So recently my friend who lives nearby has become homeless. The thing is it’s partially by choice. He has his father who lives only an hour and a half away from where he is currently, and his mom and an older sister who I believe are both in the same state somewhere, I forget exactly. His parents as far as I know do not know he is homeless. He refuses to go with either of them as he despises both of them. Neither are physically abusive, he just struggles at getting along with them. He still has a phone and uses social media. So now the part where I feel bad.
I came back to town after college this semester and he wanted to hangout. I felt rather weird about this as he is willingly homeless and would have to travel an hour to get to me without a car, but by taking the train. I feel like I would be annoyed by him the whole time because he is purposely being homeless. So I haven’t really hung out with him. He found out I was going to the pride parade in the city he is homeless in and wanted to meet up asking where I was before it started. I never responded even though I was communicating with him earlier. I was with a group of people and didn’t really want him to change the vibe especially since again, I would just think about how he is willingly homeless. I have given him advice, he does not want to work because he doesn’t want to do a job where he will go nowhere with, he dropped out of college, and I just honestly feel like I don’t want to see him IRL until he sorts out his life.
I feel like shit over that. I try not to think about it but I just feel like a shit friend, like I could be doing something to help him, or anything. I feel awful over not talking to him over this. I don’t know how to feel at all. Or what to do or what to say. I’ve given him my thoughts and advice and he refused everything I said. I’m not sure. Anyone here have any advice at all?
