My first time GMing - Thanks to Matt

Last Sunday, I DM for the first time. I played a variant of 3 first episode of "Running the game" . My party:

  • A ranger
  • A thief
  • A druid
  • A paladin

A made 3 important change,

  1. I was not a fan of the original kidnapping, so I change it for 2 merchant seeking protection for travel, and there I run an encounter with wolves, while one of the merchant was kidnapped by goblin.

  2. I changed the settings to be in desertic place, crossing a desert and getting to a temple. Simple changes, that made the tavern and the temple feel unexpected for the players and for easy to recycle Indiana Jones and Ancient middle East reference.

  3. I run the game with de Dungeon World rules. Not the dungeon world way of building settings, as I like to do prep and tell the stories for them, but we choose dungeon World, as the character creation and rules are easier, it was easy to introduce new 3 players rpg.

My recommendations:

  1. I used printableheroes as minifig for wolfs, goblins, and the donjon map. Also for the PC some plastic figure from a tabletop game. My players were really please and gave a feeling of prep, well rewarded.

  2. I stop the adventure when the secret door is opening. Why ? After the fight with the bugbear and searching the clue, it was perfect moment for a cliffhanger. They want to know now, what would have happened, and maybe this one-shot will become a campaign.

Thanks a lot to Matt Colville, without him I couldn't have prep and run this first adventure.

PS: The thief almost killed the main plot in the first 5 min, as he was trying to poison the merchant :)
