Nope, you're not going to be getting something for nothing!
So, we had a 20% off store wide sale on the weekend. We managed to clear out a lot of old stock, so it was pretty good. Generally speaking, unless something if faulty we only offer exchange or store credit.
Customer bought 3 $100 canvases. At 20% off, she only paid $240 for them. I served her on Saturday, so I know what she paid. She brings 2 of them back today because one has a minute tear in it, and the other is slightly bowed. She wants a refund. I tell her I have to call the boss to authorise that and that's all good. She says yeah, go ahead. So I ask the customer for her receipt. C is customer, Me is me.
Me: ok, so we can go ahead and refund those. Do you have your receipt?
C: sorry, it's at home, but you have the price on the ones you have.
Me: I still need the receipt. We had a sale on the weekend and I need to know what you paid for them.
C: Oh, I bought them before your sale,on Friday.
Now I'm thinking Nah, lady. I served you, and I don't work Fridays.
Me: I can't give you a cash refund or store credit without your receipt. You'll need to come back, or I can exchange like for like.
C: but I bought them on Friday.
Me: sorry, but you actually bought them Saturday, from me, and unless you can prove otherwise, I can only offer and exchange unless you produce your receipt.
At this point she got all huffy and accepted the exchange, muttering about not being worth $80 each anyway etc. Essentially she wanted to get away with a $100 item for $40....not on my watch lady!
