Much more accurate than the previous one I saw today, good job!

Agreed

FrostbitejoOP•

After seeing the [recently posted] (https://www.reddit.com/r/stevenuniverse/comments/8x0gr4/new_steven_universe_height_scale_read_comments/) height chart, without wanting to undermine the effort that went into making it, I noticed a lot of errors and wanted to try making my own height comparison. Although characters vary heights from episode to episode (especially the Diamonds), I've lined up everyone to the best my of ability according to multiple groupshots and references where characters are directly lined up together or in fullbody range of each other.

Let me know how I did!

Also, because it's hard to see from the size, here's some close-up parts:

97
Bewan'But I can make it look even gooder'•

The Diamonds are much smaller in their first appearence. Mostly because I think the Crew reevaluated their height when they realised they were close to Sugulite height as opposed to Alexandrite.

71
FifthDragon•

Don’t you mean... Alexandr-height?

I’ll see myself out

46
FrostbitejoOP•

Yeah, that's true. I looked at all of their appearances; they're much larger later on.

14
gradyjkelly•

The other one was terribly wrong and used animation errors in its size comparison

28
FrostbitejoOP•

I'm glad I wasn't the only one to feel that way.

20
FifthDragon•

It looks great! I think maybe the other one was more scientifically accurate, but yours is more story accurate

7
FrostbitejoOP•

Thank you!

Scientifically accurate? They don't have official heights, and the other one has some pretty obvious errors (like Pearl and Stevonnie being close in height, which Stevonnie is taller than Garnet) so I'm not sure what you mean.

17
FifthDragon•

Oh my bad, I missed that you used actual shots from the show where the characters were together. I was thinking scientific as in they used evidence (screenshots) and math to figure out the heights. But I realize now that you both did that

1
FrostbitejoOP•

Ah, gotcha. OP mentioned in their comments that they didn't use shots where several Gems were included and rather searched for individual shots, which lead to some big differences between our scales.

2
Cogman117•

I think you got those links a little wrong there, the "Large Characters" link gives the medium character picture

6
FrostbitejoOP•

Thank you, fixed :)

2
QK5Alteus•

I can't declare this complete until we have tiny amethyst on there.

3
MontySpud•

The background is white diamond

64
FrostbitejoOP•

She big.

28
Flamma_Man•

For real though, she's probably going to be a head or two taller than Blue and Yellow Diamond based upon the size of her hand.

9
re-elocution•

Geez, they were fighting ants. How did the gems even survive as long as they did? The diamonds must have been toying with them or something.

33
-Andromeda-Lapis best gem•

Imagine fighting 8 super powered cockroaches with an insect repellant, but 1 is a flying cockroach that keeps locking you down with water powers and is immune to that insect repellant, and another is teleporting all over the place around you. Yeah... I don't think i'd want to fight them

43
beautifulpoe•

They’re bigger than cockroaches. More like rats or small cats. Better yet, think of what it would be like if you tried to give 8 cats a bath all at the same time in an enclosed area. Like, you’ll live, but you will not have a good time.

31
earosenz•

It's one horse-sized duck vs 100 duck-sized horses

3
Samruxneat•

Blue basically admits to this in her thoughts, right?

1
Geekladd•

I don't understand why there are size charts for a show that can't even keep the relative sizes between characters right in the same episode

16
FrostbitejoOP•

I'm pretty sure they keep the relative sizes the same, but they alter proportions like crazy.

For me personally, I just wanted to try to make the most accurate chart I could. It was a bit of a challenge, but I found it pretty interesting.

13
Jamato-sUnmeep morps are the best•

They don't. Amethyst literally had 2 different heights in Reunited. Taller than Steven and identical to Steven

5
EdymnionDoesn't care if you saw a spoiler or not.•

Yeah, they play with heights a lot to express different emotional tones.

5
Samruxneat•

I can assure you it has no deep meaning such as "emotional tones" or shit like that. The storyboarders simply don't care, because that's not their intention with the show. But personally I think it's bad storyboarding.

1
DoctorOblivian•

this looks a lot more natural and lines up with a lot of the various interactions we have already seen.

14
Chryslerdude•

Now this one's more like it... but is Jasper really bigger than Bismuth?

I thought it was the other way around.

Aside from that, I love this height chart.

11
FrostbitejoOP•

She is! I was surprised going into this because I thought Bismuth was taller than Garnet, but Garnet's actually taller in many shots (including the chibi opener) and Jasper's taller than Garnet.

And thanks!

21
earosenz•

Jasper is HUGE. Remember her exit hole from the kindergarten?

7
Chryslerdude•

Yeah... but I thought Bismuth looked more muscular than her, I thought they were the same height too.

I'm saying Bismuth is huge too.

3
earosenz•

Bismuth is broader, Jasper is taller

1
conspiraciei am made of love•

This is well done!

I wonder if you have any thoughts on the relative sizes, after putting this together? For example, I think it's interesting that a fusion of 3 of the 6 smallest characters on the show (Sugilite) is significantly larger than the Ruby fusion, which is five gems of similar size, or Fluorite, a fusion of six gems.

7
FrostbitejoOP•

Thank you! :)

Yeah, I do! I think it's the fusions that surprised me the most since there really doesn't seem to be a hard and fast rule for their sizes; though I think there should be for at least same-gem fusions. I was really surprised there's not a huge difference between singular Topaz and fusion Topaz, since they're a bulky gem in general. The Ruby fusion was suprisingly massive to me. And I thought Bismuth was a lot bigger than she was. It's also really obvious looking at them all that a majority of gems fall within a certain size, and that fusions would be that much more of a threat to the diamonds, who loom over singular gems but are quickly caught up to in size once fusing starts. I can't wait until we see the temple fusion and see if the temple is true-to-scale.

10
PadawanNerd•

Didn't Sardonyx say at one point that it isn't the size of the composing gems that matters, but how big the fusion herself feels?

Or something along those lines. It's an interesting idea, the size of the fusion corresponding to the size of her 'personality'. Could explain a lot.

7
FrostbitejoOP•

I don't remember that quote, but that would make a lot of sense!

5
Levi1208•

I haven't really focused too much on height, but in my opinion PD is probably closer to Opal's size (maybe Opal should be smaller? this is kinda confusing already lol) and Sardonyx could be a just a bit bigger as well as the Topaz fusion. But this is definitely the most accurate height comparison I've seen so far, and I know it takes a lot of effort, because I've tried. Needless to say, I didn't get very far

7
FrostbitejoOP•

It took hours... I wasn't ready for it, but I was committed at that point lol.

I used multiple shots referencing every gem so I'm really confident about their placement. Pink Diamond isn't very big, but Opal is bigger than her based on her appearances so far. Sardonyx is to scale. Fusion Topaz changed size a lot depending on the scene, so she was harder to pin down, but I went with what felt right based on the scenes I had seen.

8
Levi1208•

When I attempted to make a comparison I actually used a similar shot from The Return to compare Garnet and Opal and wow, she actually seems a lot taller in the one you sent. It's pretty frustrating how inconsistent the character sizes can be, changing drastically in just a few seconds. And about Topaz, she seemed VERY large in the scene Aquamarine called her in the woods (emphasized by the stomping). And Sardonyx... I just kinda wish she was bigger lol... BUUUUT if you consider that Sardonyx's hands are about the same length as Steven's height then she should be bigger (although I guess the wikia artwork isn't 100% accurate either)

3
FishTac_RTthe eyes that stare deep into the mind and soul•

Wait, Smoky is that tall?! How did that never hit me in the show!!

6
FrostbitejoOP•

We don't see them a lot, but it's obvious in this shot!

11
Jechtael•

This one's much better than the other recent one(s). The slightly-larger-than-human part of the scale is a little weird, but not so much that it's outside of "Yeah, I could be the one who's estimating it incorrectly."

Every time I see one of these I see the Pentaruby and think it's a joke scale XD She's still larger than I see her, but not to a "Ha, our single-Ruby's huge, SU scale is inconsistent, amirite?" degree.

5
FrostbitejoOP•

Thanks! Yeah, those Gems were tough because everyone's proportions vary so much, but this seemed the most accurate based on the screenshots I found.

Yo, Pentaruby surprised me with how huge she is! (Also just now I'm realizing I forgot the 3 Ruby fusion, darn). I used this scene to get her height.

RuthlessTheHoomanHiya•

Cool but where's the corrupted Jasper fusion? Wow, nice chart.

I didn't know that Fluorite was THAT tall. Really makes you think.

5
FrostbitejoOP•

I almost included corrupted Jasper but then I forgot tbh haha. Yeah, Fluorite is BIG. I guess it makes sense, she's a fusion of six gems.

5
RuthlessTheHoomanHiya•

Fluorite is B I G C A T E R P I L L A R G R A N N Y .

2
EdymnionDoesn't care if you saw a spoiler or not.•

Polyamy Grammy.

2
earosenz•

Actually, Fluorite is pretty small considering that she's a six-gem fusion. Alexandrite, a four-gem fusion, towers over her. Fluorite must be a group of tinies.

Has anyone attempted to identify all of her components?

2
InfestedInside•

Idk, I think that Opal is shorter than Rainbow Quartz

4
FrostbitejoOP•

A lot of people seem to think that for some reason, but Rainbow Quartz isn't very big. Opal is larger than her.

5
FinowuhIf Every Diamond Were Perfect...•

People probably think that because Opal is much shorter in her first appearance and in the shot before this one Rainbow Quartz is taller too.

5
earosenz•

Yeah that's kind of curious when you think about it. Maybe Pink's status as the smol-est Diamond limits the size of Rainbow while Amethyst's incredible power for a Gem of her type gives Opal the extra boost.

0
FrostbitejoOP•

I think when it comes down to it there's not a hard and fast rule about size and design besides trying to capture the relationship between the two gems. I don't think Amethyst is considered overly powerful for a gem of her type since she's an 'overcooked runt'.

3
earosenz•

I don't agree, we have some indications that Amethyst is unusually powerful despite being overcooked. The biggest thing is that she can summon an Agate-level weapon ("Oh wow... Not every Quartz can make a whip like this" - Bismuth, + Holly Blue's weapon is also a whip). Then there was Jasper telling Amethyst that she should have been like Jasper, and the fact that Amethyst could actually do some damage to Jasper when catching her off guard. Amethyst also seems to have a greater talent for shape-shifting than any of the other Gems we've met.

0
Pat-Man15•

my only criticism is that Florite is waaay too bit on this, she's much closer to Opal's height.

3
FrostbitejoOP•

Thanks for the input. I used this image as a reference, comparing Fluorite to Rhodonite after setting Rhodonite's height from this image with Garnet, so it should be relatively accurate. Opal was also scaled compared to Garnet. We haven't seen much of Fluorite so maybe she's just larger than you remember? She rarely stands up so much, she's usually in a caterpillar pose haha.

12
Pat-Man15•

That's true, but if she was comparable to Malachite in size, then she wouldn't fit into Emerald's ship.

0†

Those ships are a lot bigger on the inside than they seem, remember the Ruby’s ship

10
FrostbitejoOP•

Not sure how you're saying that with such certainty since we only saw Emerald's ship for one episode, the scale the Gems are drawn in is frequently off, and Emerald's ship is actually pretty spacious.

But I think it's very possible. If anything, I guess the ship is larger than we thought. What's interesting is when I use the image I provided where everyone's in the ship as my reference image, Fluorite is suddenly waay bigger than in my height chart (using Steven as reference point). So while the scale fluctuates from big to bigger, Fluorite is always a huge Gem (as she should be logically, being a fusion of six Gems).

I think you're harping too much on the scale of the ship - we don't know how big it is. But we know Fluorite is really big, and she fits fine, so it must be a big ship.

4
Kong_Diddy•

Yes, Blue Diamond is looking fierce here! Steven looked so small when he was about to get crushed by Yellow, and it really does make it seem more height appropriate. She looked massive in that scene compared to him!

3
violetknightowl•

I dont know why it makes me feel so weird that Steven is smaller than ruby and sapphire. And Peridot. Although I think now that he is maturing, recent episodes seem to put him closer to Amethysts hieght, so maybe this will change soon.

3
FrostbitejoOP•

I know, I want him to be taller. And he's just so tiny now from the direction the show is taking stylistically :/

1
violetknightowl•

What really makes it weird is that we know ruby and sapphire are tiny, like ruby's cowboy outfit is an extra small, and in that episode steven is relatively the same size, but he really doesnt strike me as the kid who is wearing extra small clothes. It just seems like he should be bigger, and hopefully we get to see him grow soon. (Side note: did he look like he grew a bit to anyone else when he woke up from his ghost state? I know its a longshot but his button on his tux had popped)

1
SirknobblesZoltron says: "That's a question for your doctor."•

I don’t think it’s fair to put down the same gem three times

3
Ojo46Hiatuses eat away at my insides•

If you’re talking about Topaz, one of them is a Topaz on her own and the other is Topaz fusion

6
FrostbitejoOP•

The only gem I put down twice was Peridot (with and without her enhancements.) You might be confusing singular Topaz with fusion Topaz.

5
SirknobblesZoltron says: "That's a question for your doctor."•

Haha, no I meant Steven, rose and pink diamond. I guess I wasn’t very clear on that. I also said twice on accident. This whole joke is falling apart...

2
FrostbitejoOP•

I see what you did there haha

2
Domtm69•

What Gem is next to lapis on the left?

3
FrostbitejoOP•

Carnelian. She was with the other Amethyst Guards.

3
hobbythebear•

I think the height of Malachite and Fluorite is wrong . Especially Malachite :/

3
FrostbitejoOP•

Thanks for the input. Fluorite is surprisingly big from all the references I used. Malachite should be pretty accurate, she had decent references. She often looks taller because she has to stand up on her back limbs. When she's on all four she's not as tall.

2
HumorousHeliotropeFantastic•

If only the creators were this conscious about keeping their characters on model... kinda sad when we just have to go “shapeshifting” to justify the inconsistency in character size all the time even when they have no reason to change their size.

3
FrostbitejoOP•

I mean I think we all just know at this point that their sizes and proportions aren't always accurate :/
