What Was Waiting in the Waves
#What Was Waiting in the Waves
I must've been just seventeen
And caught in Summer's gaze;
My childhood a distant dream;
Tomorrow waiting in the waves.
I felt its breath run through my hands,
When wind caressed my face.
It smelled of ships and far-off lands:
My future waiting in the waves.
I ventured out and near the shore.
I paced the edge for days
And watched the sky for something more
Than what was waiting in the waves.
I offered it balloons
And other remnants from our games
But none of these make us immune
From what was waiting in the waves.
I wore my yellow sundress
And I learned its subtle ways
And though I failed, I did my best
To quell it waiting in the waves.
So in despair I held my breath,
A scream raced through my veins,
Then out I walked into the depths
To spite what's waiting in the waves.
I left a red balloon behind
And all that it contains.
Whole universes intertwined
With monsters waiting in the waves.
So if you find a barefoot track
Of footprints gone one-way
Right out to sea, but none come back,
You'll know I'm waiting in the waves.
