Unleavened
The preacher said to work
every day until you can no longer stand.
To wrestle every day to the ground.
But the angel snapped Jacob's hip out of joint.
And I am no Jacob.
I was told with you I'd be born again.
But I keep coming back the same man.
Forty days until the promised land.
Forty days over and over again.
I know with you I'd rise from death,
but I am no savior when I resurrect.
The stone does not move.
My wounds do not heal.
I am unleavened bread.
But, I stay vigilant, just like you said.
I watch for your light through the widowsill
I watch it retreat back into the sky.
Your daily ascension.
So, Lord, I much prefer Sheol,
a windowless room,
a flameless wick.
There is no greater heaven than this.
I am unleavened bread.
