Peppermint

There was this one time
When she came back
Wearing her hair differently
And made little eye contact

Every time I spoke to her
She'd sigh before responding
I remember

I followed her into the kitchen 
Where she stood motionless
By the kettle
And we both fell silent

She poured herself a peppermint tea
Since when did she drink it?
