So something is keeping me up at night and I need to talk about it with at least someone.

Hey guys. I made a "I suck" thread before a long time ago, but now I want to say something different.

My friend and I played dragon Ball fighters around the same time, and before you know it, he's picked up the game and slaying dudes online. I'm not. I asked him why and he said "I just lacked game sense".

I go on to ask him if he drops inputs, because I do constantly and my character on screen suffers. He says "all the time" yet I never see his character freeze up or do a wrong move. It looks like his character is still able to do something and he was able to continue off it.

It's making me so good damn frustrated at the game that I can't pick up this game or any fighting game. In fact I stopped playing. I'm scared of playing, because I feel like if I keep playing I'm going to make bad habits, and I want to play right if I'm going to play at all.

I think another thing my friend told me was to "point out something you made a mistake on and focus on fixing that one thing" which is good advice for some people. But what if you don't know what you are doing wrong? I asked him that and he said "Well that's bad." Is there no fix for that?

He's a great guy. Love the dude to death. In fact just called him at 1 in the morning to talk to him about it because it's keeping me from sleeping (He didn't mind lol it's all love). He told me that he doesn't look like he's messing up a lot because of auto combos, but I feel like it's something else too.

I don't know. I've got this feeling that if I were to pick it up again, I'll never get better simply because I'm me. And that sucks. That thought drives me insane.

I want to pick up the game and at least feel like I have a handle on the feel of the game. Does anyone even know what I'm talking about anymore? I guessing I'm asking for help. Help?

The way you’re feeling is perfectly normal, this genre is obtuse and counter-intuitive and does little to actually teach you to play.

After reading your post, here’s some advice I’d give:

  1. Everyone learns at a different speed
  2. auto combos make everyone look overwhelming
  3. No one is incapable of learning this game. I know it feels like it at the start by absolutely anyone can learn to play if they have the drive.
  4. Watching old replays is great. It helps to have some knowledge of how the game should be played but for starters just look at whenever you get hit, why didn’t you block it?
  5. You’re gonna lose a tonne of games, losing is a part of the genre, I’m on a losing streak myself. The only way to lose is to give up.

If you’re looking for a way to break into the genre, check out my website. www.turtlehermitschool.com

It’s loaded with beginner resources both written and in video format

The learning part of any game is the most fun anyway. Just take your time, and if you feel it's not for you there is no shame in just playing something else.

In my case, whenever I have free time mashing buttons in training mode is almost therapeutic, super relaxing. Especially after a long day. But I can see how for others it could be more stress than anything else.

If the problem is input then the only option is grind. Go learn the universal bnb and keep doing it until you learn it, if u learnt it but still isn’t comfortable then read into team building and start learning combos for characters you like. You’re better off learning combos than playing matches because you’re at a stage where you still have weak groundwork and getting bodied in a match is demoralizing and can make u not want to train.

After you feel better with inputs you can then look up matches and character guides to learn neutral game for ur team and try it against AI then friends. You can do casual matches or spar with friends to see how much you improved. This is the point where you can improve specific parts like ur friend tells you to.

It really sounds like you need to get professional help for Generalized Anxiety Disorder.

You shouldn't be this anxious and losing so much sleep over a video game.

Once your anxiety is in a better place you'll feel more comfortable playing the game.

You should also stop caring about winning and losing. Its about getting better.

Well first, I am seeing a therapist and psychiatrist.

But honestly when I said that, it wasn't the BIGGEST deal in the world. I was just wondering, and when my mind wonders I never go to sleep.

Thats good happy to hear your getting help.

Ownestly just grinding out matches helps too. Just play even if your bor ay your best, but always take a step if yournot having fun.

Maybe post some gameplay footage from a recent match of yours? It's hard to say what you're doing wrong if we have no way of knowing. It could be tons of things, bad neutral, dropping combos, unoptimized combos, no defense, etc.

If your primary issue seems to be dropping inputs and it bothers you more than anything, you should consider trying a different controller method. Assuming you're on gamepad, you could try to buy a fightstick or a fightpad - I personally bought my first ever fightstick for FighterZ and it improved my ability to execute inputs immensely

On the flip side I cant use a stick for shit but play very well with pad. So don't expect to buy a controller and just suddenly improve.

From what you described I get the idea that you barely play the game, yet somehow expect to be really good as soon as you jump into a match. It also seems like you care too much about winning or loosing, rather than actually focusing on improving.

You mentioned that part of the issue is you not knowing what you are doing wrong. Well can you tell us what exacly is giving you issues, then maybe we can give you some tips or advices, would be glad to help you if I can.

Alternatively you can do some research on your own in youtube, and try to deal with one issue at a time.

My dude I felt the same way. I recently went through about a month of just off days I dropped a rank I lost my orange square. Even my playing was suffering in other games. For the dropping combos thing I just suggest going into practice and running those combos until your hands break. Build yourself to pretty much run those combos subconsciously. Noticing bad habits is the first step to ridding yourself of them.

Does your friend have prior experience in fighters/competitive games? It takes time to learn inputs and twice that to be comfortable with them. Pvp games require different skills like learning your and your opponents habbits and breaking them.

Unfortunately it is hard to learn a game when there are 150 things to keep track of but that is also the best thing, there is always something to practice and it is way more enjoyable to one day find out that the thing that used to cause you problems is now easy for you.
