Milk and Feathers
Milk and Feathers
By E.S.
I was walking to the door with the groceries and my habits and the key
when I saw a cardinal in shade on the boardwalk that was like an ember in water,
and I paused, gandering it as it gandered me,
and for a moment we were stuck.
The passerine was timeless.
It watched like God and flashed like blindness to the palmettos.
It was a juxtaposition I almost believed in—
sutured in wood rot, plucking termites like wishes.
Nonetheless, it dissipated, and I walked into bricks.
