Handling Gender Dysphoria without transitioning
I've experienced steadily increasing Gender Dysphoria since late childhood. I've made various attempts at fixing myself, including therapy and self-medicating with hormones for a short period of time. The source of my dysphoria is definitely what Blanchardians would call "autogynephilia". I was able to manage it for years, but in the past year or two it has become bad enough that I have a hard time interacting socially without getting in a very depressive mood, and I'm turning to substance abuse in order to be a functional member of society. The reason I did not continue my transition is for the following reasons:
-
I'm too old (late 20s) to achieve a result that is likely to satisfy me – most transwomen beyond puberty don't achieve what I'd call particularly good results, and the older you get the less likely it is. I greatly respect transwomen for whom passing is not the sole criteria for a successful transition, but I strongly doubt I would be satisified by anything less
-
Autogynephilia (or the equivalent in the local medical terminology) is not accepted as a valid reason for transition in my country (you essentially have to demonstrate persistent femininity or gender-related BDD starting in early life, which I can't), which means that I'd have to self-medicate permanently
-
I have other goals in life, including being a parent, which transitioning would make less likely for me to achieve
The consensus in trans communities seems to be that transitioning is the only proven recipe for getting rid of one's gender dysphoria. The reason I ask this question here instead of in a trans subreddit is that I'm looking for other viewpoints. I know that the rationalist community includes many trans people and probably a number of people who have "flirted" with transitioning without ending up doing so, and I would be grateful to hear some thoughts on other things I could try in order to attempt becoming a less dysphoric and more functional member of society.
