Unsure as of right now. Puma said he was leaning towards having it this morning.

Weeeell, to be fair, it is his body so he should always have final say, but the FO definitely has a place to push for whatever option is best for the team.

18
Paqza•

I mean, yeah, it should be, but he should follow Altchek's and the specialist's recommendations.

Honestly, they should just take him out back and you know what I'm not gonna say it because people take things way too literally.

This team is the Trainwreck that keeps on giving.

Second half of next season we should have a 100% Ces for the first time. I need a drink.

Yes then when he underperforms it will be “he hasn’t played in a long time, he needs to get his timing down..:”

Oh by the way, this will cost the organization approximately $550,000 per week for the next 2.5 years.

ad nauseum. He's done.

2

Hey, the last time we got ces for the second half of the Season it worked out pretty okay

5
PM-ME-YOUR-CONCERN<== SHATTERED MY DREAMS•

Yeah. $110 million for 2 half seasons. What a deal.

4
KeithJose•

Cespedes yearns for the lax pleasures of the DL.

1

This will be like David Wright II. He is done, especially with the Mets' witch doctor med staff on it.

Lol

This will probably be the next David Wright type thing, drag on ad nauseum, and he will never be the same.

He doesn’t care. He got his contract

That one made sense at the time, at least. Unlike all of the people who were ecstatic that we signed Bruce despite it making no sense whatsoever.

13
Doctah__WahweeMeet me 60 feet, six-inches away.•

It made sense under the pretense that there was no way all of Lagares, Nimmo, Conforto and Cespedes would be healthy. And well this was true. Nobody expected Bruce to be unhealthy though.

10
GuidedBySteven•

Mmm, I'd still disagree. He can only play the corner outfield and he'd been mediocre-to-bad three out of the previous four seasons, so it was pretty easy to see it backfiring.

3
LucasDudacrisflair•

That makes sense for a 1-year deal, not a 3-year deal. There was never any possibility where that signing didn't result in either

A. Punting on Nimmo and Lagares (Conforto is automatically playing everyday, Cespedes is automatically playing everyday [assuming he's active], and you didn't just guarantee Bruce 39 million dollars to backup Nimmo and/or Lagares).

B. Moving Bruce to 1st (which the organization has shown no interesting in doing long term), and therefore essentially punting on Dom and Alonso.

C. Knowingly and willingly agreeing to sign somebody for 3 years and 13 million per year even though you don't plan on him starting by the 3rd year.

I want the record to show that I like Jay Bruce. I think he's a good albeit undisciplined hitter who makes most lineups better. I was in favor of trading for him in 2016. I was in favor of picking up his option in 2017. I thought he was gonna be productive this year, and even still think there'a about a 50/50 chance he's productive player next year. But this deal never made any sense. It was not an insurance policy against injury. It was not a contingency plan just in case any of the aforementioned younger players fail to perform well. This was no plan. There was no envisioned sequence of events that the Mets had in mind when they made this signing that would've, even hypothetically, resulted in it making sense. To reiterate, this was no plan.

This is all ignoring the fact that Nimmo had already shown in 215 PA that he's probably a better player than Bruce.

1
firesnap6789•

Lagares is made of glass and at best came in on off days or as a defensive replacement. Outside of a few hot stretches here and there he hasn’t been starter quality.

Nimmo had always been viewed by the org as a 4th outfielder. He was never seen as a starter. We weren’t “punting” on him, we were assuming he continued to play to the level the organization projected him to.

Whether you agree with that or not, the plan was to have Cespedes/conforto/bruce in the outfielder every day with decent backups nimmo and lagares. That was the plan. To say there was no plan is just asinine. And this isn’t even considering conforto missed the first month of the season with an injury no one was sure how he would come back from.

1
NewYorkMetsalheadThe Once and Future Captain•

Bruce was hardly the only outfielder available, though. Jon Jay or Jarrod Dyson would have been infinitely better choices.

1
LucasDudacrisflair•

I am the biggest Jay Bruce defender out there and I was absolutely livid when they made that signing. A 1-year deal would've made sense: bring in a proven major leaguer to guard against the facts that Cespedes is made of glass, Conforto might still be broken, Lagares can't hit righties (and is made of glass), and who knows, maybe Nimmo sucks. But a 3-year deal was completely asinine. I don't think any signing acquisition this team has made since I've become a fan made quite is little sense as this one, and I know how much that's saying.

2
IPainTrainOPMVPiazza•

Hindsight is 20-20, but I honestly don’t think the trade (AND RE-SIGNIG) was worth it. We didn’t win in 2015 and he doesn’t play enough games to justify his contract.

I remember how stoked I was when the news got out he re-signed with us. Now I just fume with anger. Nothing goes right for this team.

Infuriating.

banana455•

Hindsight is 20/20, especially in this case. You can argue the merits of the extension, but there is no question the trade was worth it.

I was strictly against the deal after he opted out of contract after 2016 season

What exactly is wrong with him that it took 2 months to find this out? I thought he was lazy and a thief and he exposed this organization as one with a lack of accountability that would tolerate lax play and mystery DL stints BEFORE this atrociously handled issue. Wow the Wilpons with their appointed (never hired) stooge GM Alderson have been totally exposed by this guy and guess who loses (again) - Met fans, who deserve much better. Fred and Jeffy have destroyed this organization - no present and no future for this team - keep meddling Jeff!

On average he plays 64% of all games in his career. Thats 103 games a year.

In his last 5 years he is averaging 82 games a year.

In his last 4 as a met only 77
