My daughter watches storms

Feedback Received!

Outside, the rain taps on the window.

The sky is turning grey.

But I don’t notice; for the thousandth time,

My mind has wandered away.

The wind begins to howl,

The trees bend and groan.

But in my mind a storm is raging,

A storm that’s all my own.

Artillery whizzes overhead

And crashes into the mountainside.

Or was that just thunder?

Is the lightning out there or inside?

Hail begins to hit the sidewalk;

Staccato machinegun fire tears through my brain.

Bombs explode behind my eyes;

I no longer see the rain.

I’m completely lost now.

Which one is real, and which is the dream?

Am I in the mountains yearning for home?

Or am I at home reliving this scene?

I can smell the gunpowder.

I can actually taste the acrid haze.

The sky outside is swirling;

The sky in my mind is ablaze.

A gentle touch… a soothing voice.

A smile in her sapphire blue eyes.

The smoke and mist in my mind clear away

As she admires the stormy skies.

Let me know what you think, and if anyone has any good ideas for a title, I'm open to suggestions. Thanks!
