Parents upset because I won't let them cut in line
I train service dogs, it's what I do and I'm good at it.
It takes a long time to get to the point where I'm comfortable handing the dog over to it's new human, knowing they will be a good team and that the human got a dog he /she can trust to do the job.
I now have a dog that's almost done training, I've trained it to be an anxiety service dog for a woman who was the victim of a terrible assault and as a result got severe PTSD, self harming issues and panic attacks.
Now I've been contacted by a young couple with a child with severe peanut allergy. They insist I train a dog - a dog they already bought, a breed that I normally would not recommend for this sort of job, and want me to "train it real fast so it can sniff out the peanuts in any product". I told them that I have a waiting list, and I'm not even sure a dog is the best way to go here. They got all insulted and hissed that surely a child would be the priority here, who cares about the adult clients who suffer daily and have waited a year for their dog.
I listened to their reasoning for a few minutes, too stunned to react. Then I just said I won't be training a dog for them, not now, not next year.
I just wanted to share and vent, things like this really gets to me, you know? Like...what happend to all life is equal in value? Why would this child, that got parents to care for it, be more urgent than a woman with no social network, who is a prisoner in her own home because she is afraid to go out alone? Who needs a dog that can block her when she panics in public and stop her when she cause harm to herelf?
Why do the sick kids, who got families to care for them, awlays get the therapy dog, and the old, lonely people who never have a visitor or a phone call or a bithday card get nothing? I'm not saying the kids shouldn't get the dog too, just....there needs to be some sort of balance. Kids are just people too, they aren't magical, holy creatures that we need to worship as gods. And old people are often forgotten. It makes me wonder, at what age do our value start to go downhill? Is it when we are independent people, contributing to society?
