[Feedback Request] The Nomad Heart
Picture a crowd
Of desert people, heads bowed
Driven over dunes
Made weary by the white-hot noons
And burning breeze
Chewing water from the cactus trees
While piously repeating:
“Journeys end with lovers meeting—”
.
Never stopping
Limping when they have to, hopping
Mad with heat
Bandaging the blistered feet
Of those reduced to crawling
Still with scattered voices calling
Down the line, like sheep bleating:
“Journeys end with lovers meeting—”
.
On they charge
Like fools towards the bright mirage
That none attain
Where lovers wash their feet in rain
And sit at ease
In scattered pairs by poplar trees
That echo with the greeting:
“Journeys end with lovers meeting—”
.
That’s the dream
The ancient, universal theme
The human urge
To find a point where paths converge
Concocting some
Unchanging equilibrium
With someone else, that isn’t fleeting
Marked (of course) by lovers meeting—
.
No. At best
You walk more slowly two abreast
And sometimes pause
To hover round a common cause
But drift, drift, drift apart
Every day, the nomad heart
More quietly entreating:
“Journeys end with lovers meeting,
Journeys end with lovers meeting.”
.
