Angel of the North
Note: my previous two poems had a loose relationship with meter. This is more rigorous and should be uniform throughout - almost like a chant. It's inspired by the sculpture of the same name in Gateshead: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angel_of_the_North. The full stops represent blank lines (which Reddit strips out) rather than periods.
.
Twenty metres tall, but seeming
Somehow small beneath the dreaming
Vast expanse of heaven gleaming
.
Darkly like the sea but bigger
Stands a lonely iron figure,
Baffled by the endless vigour
.
Of the sky: the British weather
Mixing light and dark together,
Making England rain forever,
.
Standing still as if in wonder
At the sky it labours under,
Never shrinking from the thunder,
.
Never turning - just embracing
Light and shadow from the racing
Riverboats of cloud outpacing
.
Slower sky. O lively Springs,
O quiet Fall - the sculpture brings
A sense of truth to all these things.
It holds creation in its wings.
