It Means Something
Who makes Ted Hughes jokes 6 hours after meeting a manic depressive?
What kind of addict melts down pain and pushes it into their veins?
Why would you tell her you love her 2 hours later?
--
'You can't just use it like that, it means something, it has to,
what does it mean to you?'
--
When you revel in your reflection before the mirror cracks?
When mother's touch and bandaids can't cover wounds that fester from the inside?
When my heart bleeds golden into the Seine but the water's still stone cold?
When with gritted teeth we fight the black bridge between our hearts and cry into the phone at 1:30 in the morning that we don't know if we can give up on this?
--
Am I so blind in my search for love without pain?
Have we lost faith,
that they are not bound,
so I cannot see the cost?
That pain is always in the past,
and love is good,
and we owe it to ourselves.
