Feature Request: Meaningfully different colors for empires at galaxy creation

At least force every base color to be unique, and forbid combinations of the same color.
Even just this would be a huge upgrade. Jesus even just give us a map mode that does only this if you don't want to override colors of player generated empires
Even better IMO would be to give each empire one colour (secondary is just for flags and/or ships), and have their borders represent their federation/vassal status.
If they could do that with portraits too that would be spectacular.
I believe they do do that with portraits already as of several versions ago
If they do then I have a mod that's breaking it. I see a lot of repeats, both in normal empires as well as primitives.
Are you sure it's not just a couple of nomadic xenophile aliens migrating throughout the various empires?
Same thing happened to me. Every single empire was gray and black except the Prikiki-Ti (orange + something else) and my Roman empire (red and black). Even the machine uprisings were all also gray and black. It really was a bit annoying.
I've noticed that rebels and uprisings will always appear with a grey and black flag. Given how common rebellions are with AI empires these last couple patches, this may be the reason you see so many of the same colored flags.
You people seem to be the outsiders of the Monochrome Galaxy.
This is why i have done 2 things
Downloaded a mod on steam that has 100 different colors, i really dont understand why base game only has 10 or whatever.
Ive gone through and created 40 different custom empires with differing color combinations and civics.
I agree and know both of these things are a little ridiculous, however i personally dont see PDX doing anything to fix this. At least not until they release the expanded nation editor DLC, wait sorry story pack, with 30 extra colors, 25 new emblems, 4 new traits, and the ability to customize your starting system. Only $15.00 USD
I upvoted your comment because I thought points 1 and 2 are excellent information for people who want to alleviate the issue, but I'm fine with paying $15 or $20 every few months to support the devs. They've given me a lot of new core mechanics for free. I don't have a problem chipping in a bit for cosmetics.
From your comment, it sounds like you feel differently and that's perfectly okay. I realize that anything related to DLC tends to be controversial with strong opinions on all sides.
Thank you for bein so civil instead of just blasting me, i appreciate it :)
And i apologise for giving off the disgruntled vibe about the dlc issue. I should clarify that i agree that paying them $15 - $20 every few months is fine, especially compared to the amount of play time i get!
I just wouldnt want to pay that amount for extra colors and emblems is all with an extra bit for a customizable solar system. I'd rather have a customizable solar system feature be added in with a larger expansion, while having something small such as colors and emblems be in the free patch.
I over exaggerated and i apologise.
We're good :-) I get where you are coming from.
You are quite pleasant to talk to yourself
I'm confused. Is this still Reddit?
(Also up voted both of you for handling any disagreement like decent human beings)
Downloaded a mod on steam that has 100 different colors
What mod? Most color mods I saw were out of date.
Well here's a fun tidbit i didnt know until bout a month ago.
Most of all the graphical mods still work with the current version of the game. If though it says its out of date, itll still work. Im not at my laptop currently so i dont have the correct name of the mods im using. But ship sets like the SW old republic ships, sith sets, human clothing mod, a expanded emblem mod, tall white ships, expanded colors mod, and bout 6 others all work. Theyre out of date but still work; no glitches, crashes, or bugs are present.
I hope the information helped, it certainly made my playing experience a whole lot better when Reddit told me :)
Bonus: There's even a tutorial somewhere (didn't save it because I didn't care to use it) that shows you how to edit the text files to SAY it works with the current version so you don't have this issue.
Spectra Flag Colors is explicitly updated for 2.1 if you're worried about the outdated mods enabled warning
Spectra is great
Most graphic and more specifically Empire color mods will work fine even if they are really old mods.
They should definitely add more colors.
Crazy thought, but couldn't they let us choose the colors of AI empires in SP? In MP let the host choose colors of non-player empires.
I agree, the variety seems off. Great quality of life addition.
It's aggravating that we've had to rely on mods for this since launch. Even then I still have empires that are the same color right next to each other.
I’d really like the option to just change the AI empire colors and other superficial aspects in the live game.
I've had my empire change colors on me several times when returning to a save game. I'll start out as a blue and black machine intelligence, save the game and quit. Then come back the next day and suddenly my empires symbol has changed, and I'm now a hideous pink and green combo. It's annoying as hell.
I started out as a blue and black empire in mp but all my friends kept telling me I was gold and white
You may have colourblind mode on
I feel like something like the spectra colors mod should be implemented. Ive been playing with it awhile and Having a very large number of available colors definitely helps this issue.
Suggested solution:
1-2) The game already does this if the... I think it's the union map mode is on (It looks something like a circle in brackets)
The Count hath returned! Good post, bad luck bro. Godspeed to whatever fix they hopefully cook up.

Those bold, italic, small-caps, underlined "not"s though.
they look like "nor"s
Definitely thought the same on mobile. I figured I was seeing all these sentence fragments and assumed it was a sentence across multiple labels and couldn't find the start.
It's, uh, poetry. Yes, that's definitely what I was going for.
Nor part of the Federation
One of Two
Nor part of the Federation
Two of Two
Nor Marauders
Marauders!
A Federation
It's a deep and powerful piece about how Stellaris map colors affect the human condition or something similarly pretentious.
Better answer: Rather than fixing the colors in place, just assign each distinct entity its own color on the fly such that it does not share a similar color with a neighbor, so that two neighboring empires won't be both red, etc. The colors can simply be local to the player and filled out dynamically as a result. Similar to how Canada isn't the same color on everyone's map, but no map depicting distinct countries is going to show Canada as the same color as the US.
Former primitive civilizations always seem to spawn with the same colors.
Part of the problem is if you’ve got say 20-30 different empires + fallen + marauders There really aren’t that many visually distinct colors
R5: Screenshot of my current game to illustrate why I think this will enhance gameplay. I don't think I'm color blind, but this post will probably be a good way to find out.
I reported a bug with the coloring to Paradox a few days ago here, (you can also see a bunch of test galaxy generations I did there too) they haven't responded.
Basically there is some bug in the coloring that causes empires to loose color as you add more AIs. Starting around 12-16 AIs FEs wont spawn with color, as the number of AIs increases, more and more will spawn with a gray coloring and gray/black flags instead of actual color. EDIT: Best way to avoid this issue is to play with no more than around 12-14 AIs.
I played on normal with like 6 or 8 empires, colors are close to meaningless
