[Civ 6] Does anybody start off in a later era on a new game?

I tend to start off in the renaissance era just to bypass a lot of the early game tedium. I also find it helps significantly to expand faster when I'm playing on the higher difficulty settings compared to starting in the ancient era. Are there any major downsides to doing this, or does anyone actually use this feature? Rarely do I see any Youtubers doing it or people talking about it.

For some reason the ancient/classical eras are my favourite so I always start from there. Theres somethig very satisfying abour discovering the world around you and mapping out where you wanna settle while defending your new found kingdom from barbarians

I agree. I find the sense of progression is a lot more pronounced in the early game. Like finding the perfect spot for your second or third city can really give you a boost. As the game progresses, you have so much stuff that the improvements you can make get smaller and smaller, with a few exceptions like wonders or some of the better policy cards.

I only really did that for the achievements.

A mod where you start in advanced era and research the tree backwards to literally bring the world back to the Stone age. The true religion victory.

Expanding is much harder since warmonger penealties are way higher then early game.

I generally don't go to war at the start of a Ren. game, but I do chain out settlers very quickly with the help of Magnus in the capital and the 50% settler card. Usually manage to put down 5-6 cities before I run out of room to expand organically, and then start prepping for war.

I have only beaten and played one game of Civ 6 and I was shoved into a corner with two cities so I took out Chandragupta's capital and a city next to it and thats what i had for the rest of the game won a science victory and I also lead in Culture and tourism.

What difficulty?

Warlord. On Civ 5 I play King but since the mechanics are different I played a few difficulties down on Civ 6 Rise and Fall.

I like to be era appropriate for my civ. Ancient / Classical are fun eras, but they can be a bit repetitive if you have no relevant uniques. It just feels right for America to start in Renaissance.

I'll often skip to Classic just to get past the first turns of 'pass, pass, pass, finally I can chop jungle'.

There is no way I don't start in the Ancient Era

I like to do it for certain civs. Starting Victoria in the renaissance is fun
