Drawing a Girl

The sun shone on your face,
and where I should’ve seen the clearest, smoothest brow skin
(with its little drops of honey glistening),
there was shade cast
like something lit up
on the side of you
I could not glimpse.

It was like the artist
who sketched you
had played with the lighting,
just so something would be off.
Just off.
Just off enough to play it off
like you try with your eyes,
but can’t.

The part he gets just right.

The part he used to get right
on a face
that was alive.
