the real reason I got the wasp tattoo REVISED
tell me mother
about the night you set fire
to the subway.
hordes of pedestrians
tapping at their watches
and the new year creeps in
with sad fireworks
you were sad too
and angry.
yesterday you told me a story
you told me about January
and how you strapped on your snowshoes
and met him at a hunger strike.
tell me about dad.
tell me about his teenage smoking habit
and the time his drunken face
met the palm of your hand.
tell me about your father
whose heart stopped with the quiet
violence you knew as a girl.
was it his voice that wriggled
a worm in your brain?
was it my sister
who gave you honeysuckle
on the tip of a dagger
or was it me
whose thoughts turned rancid
when left in the car.
the wasps were born that day
the mention, erased.
don't worry
the therapist doesn't know,
either
and now I wear his mask
each morning.
I lie to the mirror, his face
so shallow
and sleep again,
his picture there.
hello again r/OCpoetry! I asked for feedback on an earlier version of this poem, and got great responses, especially from u/ActualNameisLana! I tried to destroy and remake this poem several times, but the best revision was pretty close to the original, albeit with a few cuts and line changes. If you give feedback on this poem, I would appreciate it so much if you also looked at the first version of this poem and let me know if my revision was successful, or if any edits I made take away from the quality of the poem. You can see my first version through this link: https://www.reddit.com/r/OCPoetry/comments/940ex5/the_real_reason_i_got_the_wasp_tattoo/
