Med adjustment
Seven years ago, I was a lithium first timer.
At the hospital, they hit me with God knows how many milligrams.
--
Passed out.
Woke to pee.
Passed out on my way.
Orderlies got me there and I projectile vomited.
--
Transferred to another room.
Breath catching in my lungs, I thought I was dying.
--
Seven years and several medications later,
I find myself with my prescriber, facing an impossible choice.
My meds no longer work.
Lithium, she says, is the best (only) choice.
--
I'm amenable but push back.
What if I take this and it stops working?
Then what?
Let's stay in the moment, she says.
Unsatisfactory answer but I'm a pushover.
I consent.
Start at the lowest dose and see.
--
Prescription filled, I go home.
Take with food and LOTS of water.
No problem.
May cause drowsiness, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, shortness of breath and sudden death.
Sudden death?
OK. Here goes.
Down the hatch.
--
And me?
So far, so good.
The experiment continues.
