The helper
Dorothea Adelaide walked quickly to the door.
She wasn't sure just who it was but soon she'd crossed the floor.
She wasn't used to visitors. Her family was gone.
She had no friends to speak of yet she tried to carry on.
--
Opening the door, she found a girl to her surprise.
No one else was with her. She had big round hazel eyes.
She said, “Hello, I'm Emma, and I'd like to speak to you
about what I can do to help. What is there to do?
--
“I'm sorry, I don't understand. Who sent you here today?”
“My mom did since we're neighbors. If you want, I'll go away.”
“In fact, I think there may be just a few things that need done.
The lawn could use a mowing and my garden’s overrun.”
--
Emma mowed the lawn and then she started on the weeds.
She finished and then asked if there were any other needs.
Dorothea Adelaide said “No, but thanks a lot.
Your mother is a saint for having such a lovely thought”.
--
Emma made to leave the house, her work done for the day.
Dorothea Adelaide had something else to say.
“You know you are the first to call in such a long, long while.
Your work here was amazing and you really made me smile”.
--
“You're welcome,” said the girl then she grinned and waved goodbye.
Dorothea Adelaide, tears running from her eyes,
thought about her loneliness. She hadn't been too sure
if life had not become another burden to endure.
--
Reflecting on the day, she thought she’d gained a little hope.
Just a little help had made it easier to cope.
She hoped the girl would come back soon to help or just to talk.
For now, she closed the door again and turned the heavy lock.
