Hitchhiker.
You thank me for being patient
but it's not my patience that keeps me here
it's not my willingness to settle that moves me to love
it's not my smile that calms my every waking fear
it's every piece of me that fits along your own
it's every wink and smile and touch that holds me in your arms
it's the warmth that radiates through your every open pore
it's the butterflies you elicit whenever you are near
it's your heart that opens when I speak words of nightmares and memories, one and just the same
it's your eyes that stop me in my pace, rooting me before you as if I'm the one
it's your palms that still my sadness, moving me towards grace
it's you who shifted the heavy weight, the burdens on my back
it's your fingertips that reach my shoulder and massage every ache
it's not me who found you, lost amongst the trees
it's you who picked me up, a hitchhiker along the way
and for you I'll move mountains, earth, and stone
because for me, you are the ease that welcomes me in close, gathering me towards home
