This is a sunrise after was what was probably the most intense hike I've ever done. I hiked in the previous day (it's about 17 miles each way), stayed up all night shooting (didn't sleep), captured this sunrise then hiked out. So much fun! This was on June 28th before all the BC wildfires began.

Was this at the top of the Nub?

23
ProtophobicOP•

This is part way up the nub on that little hill I think they call the Nublet. I didn't have the time to make it all the way up as the light was changing so fast.

I have a picture of Assiniboine from the nublet, and the nub, and neither look anything like this. The perspective looks different. What length lens were you using?

20
ProtophobicOP•

It is a stitch of two 16mm shots effectively creating a superwide pano. I circled in red the approximate area I took this from

nublet. great fucking word.

Almost as good as in-iboine.

People are so much more extreme than me. 17 miles each way while also staying up all night? wtf

14
MorningStillness•

I’m too tired if I stay up playing computer games past 10:30pm

6
robboelrobbo•

I mean, I have pretty much as bad as insomnia gets but there is no way I could hike anywhere after zero sleep

Hey Matt, just wanted to say I enjoy seeing your photos in here and on Instagram. You do a great job of capturing the natural beauty of a place and I also love your cityscapes. Makes me want to get out more!

3
ProtophobicOP•

Thanks, are you a Bostonian?

3
sunshine5403•

In the Greater Boston area, I go there often, especially in the summer

1

What were you guys shooting to where you didn't sleep, meth or coke?

3
zeroisfirst•

Hey do you mind me asking what trail you hiked to reach this?

3
iShakeMyHeadAtYou•

Love how people just say "Canada". Its the second largest country the planet. Its like saying "middle of nowhere, USA" WHAT PROVINCE????. that is all.

3

That is absolutely breathtaking. 💜

Esp beautiful is that highlighted mountain (s) in the background.

Cool photo, the peaks look like the temples in breath of the wild 😜

how difficult is this hike?

1
ProtophobicOP•

It's just a hike of endurance if you plan on doing it in a day like I did. If you are in good shape it takes about 8 hours. There are no real challenging parts, its just a long walk and mild elevation gain.

9
etunar•

thanks. I can probably manage it with a night of rest in between.

It was one of the locations i thought about visiting for a US/canada trip, but never materialized in the end. Living in the UK, idea of running into grizzly bears always scared me (i think they had bear warnings at the time I was researching about this place)

And if you're staying overnight, permits are usually booked months in advance.

2
WaterMnt•

which way did you go in? The best way into Assiniboine.. well I'm going to keep it a secret. But it's near Mt Brussilof Magnesite mine.

Awesome shot man. Spent two weeks up in the Canadian Rockies a few years back and will be back for another two weeks next summer but haven't and won't (yet) make it out to Assiniboine. Trying to do Berg Lake / Mount Robson if booking allows. So much fun taking photos up there, people are always amazed looking at mine and I always recommend putting it on a bucket list to get up there. The Icefields Parkway is the best drive I've ever done, hands down! Followed on Instagram.

What ND filter have you been using OP?

1
armitage2112•

Ok wait. You stayed up all night shooting and then didn't sleep during the day waiting for this sunset?

I'm hoping you meant you stayed up all night and this was sunrise lol

There's an interesting medieval alpine legend according to which it is the magical glowing rose garden of a Dwarf-King named Laurin which causes the peaks to shine red.

The South Tyrol saga of King Laurin (German: König Laurin, Ladin: Re Laurin, Italian: Re Laurino) is part of a popular tradition in the Dolomites. It is a popular explanation of the optical phenomenon of Alpenglow (Ladin: Enrosadira), by which the summit of the mountains change their color to shades of red and purple during and after sunset.[...]
King Laurin was the ruler of a thriving race of dwarves who lived up here and mined the mountains for precious jewels and valuable ores. He possessed a subterranean palace made of sparkling quartz. But his special pride and joy was the great garden located in front of the entranceway to his underground crystal castle. Countless wonderful roses blossomed in this garden, whose scent was enchanting.

don't think you needed to stretch those peaks to the point of being almost unrecognizable...they're epic enough already. but the light here is really nice!

12
jakelovesnature•

This is a gorgeous, gorgeous shot, but the peaks are definitely stretched (I was there in early July). It might not have been intentional, doing a cylindrical merge for combining two images into a pano vs. a spherical merge causes things to stretch vertically.

3

eh i'm pretty sure it's intentional as the image is 4x5 vertical. goin for them IG likes

I do need to make it out here someday. I've been west of Assiniboine camping on the logging roads you can drive in from the Settlers Road. But never hiked in yet. Friend of mine has been a few times and has some amazing shots like this one.

Another friend climbed it last August. They got lucky since they closed the area right after they started climbing. There was no way for them to know it was closed, and thankfully the fires were far enough away they weren't in danger.
