Today
Today
a bird dove before my windshield,
paused just a moment
before pulling up,
taking off
——————
Here I am
a wingless, graceless creature
suspended in that instant
proceeding some seemingly eminent collision
with a blunt, transparent force
——————
Will I end up a thud
a tiny ball of meat and feathers
bouncing once, twice, over the hood
only to be lost forever in pavement?
Probably.
——————
Perhaps there’s an initial shock
sharp inhale behind the steering wheel
But the car is driving,
still.
A car doesn’t stop for a bird.
——————
Quickly I am melted guts and rock under beating rays,
picked up on the spokes of tires,
bits of me carried where they park.
And maybe someone will say, Look, feathers.
Or maybe not.
