Summer Evening
The sun stared at me
Twinkling behind
The old green leaves
Late summer leaves
Almost autumn leaves
A great rusty golden orange
Settling between the trees
Look away, the sun said
Embarrassed and confident all at once
Look away
Look away
Look away
Shining ever harder as if
Daring me to keep looking
But I didn’t look away
I stared at the sun and the sun stared at me
But you’re beautiful, I said
I would rather go blind looking at you
Than not look at all
And the sun blushed
And the sky turned pink
And the trees whispered between themselves
And finally I looked away
Half a tear clung to my cheek
And the sun twinkled
And the sun smiled
And I walked back down the road.
