Vancouver, BC
Scarlet stains of blackberries
Thorns prick and bring joy
Smoke hazed sunset
Needles underfoot
A child’s pastel houses
Hulking gray monsters
And Eden is one step away
From the boogeyman’s wilting grass and clawing weeds.
Neverland of eternal summer returns to sleet and rain
But the child need never see behind the curtain.
Yet with age it tatters, blows in rags
Hangs Spanish mosslike from the set pieces.
Peek backstage. We are naughty, curious, brave, drunk on blackberries.
See a baby’s smile and an old couple’s laugh.
