That name has to go if the team moves here.

Well I mean a Baby Cake is a Mardi Gras thing, so that’s not really anything Wichita does. Wouldn’t expect to keep it.

The Jazz isn’t a Utah thing

Edit: Really? The New Orleans Jazz was an expansion NBA team from 1974 to 1979 and then they became the Utah Jazz in 1979. Jazz isn’t associated with Utah; it’s associated with New Orleans, you downvoting idiot

The trend of keeping names was very common in those days of the NBA, like the Philadelphia Warriors, San Diego Rockets, KC Kings, and Fort Wayne Pistons It's never really been super common in minor league baseball, and even less in the MiLB of today.

Wichita Bierocks?

I could fully support that.

In the MiLB teams are doing one night promotions with food names, like Albuquerque Green Chile Cheeseburgers, Reading Whoopies, Scranton Wilkes-Barre Perogies, and Omaha Runzas. I could see them doing that for like a promotion night, but not as a full time name.

Why would they keep it? It's a NOLA thing. You don't see NWA keeping the Wranglers name after they left here. They put a new name that would fit their local culture.

"Baby Cakes" and I thought the Wingnuts name was bad.

Wingnuts is definitely worse, but they are both bad.

Baby Cakes! Personally I love the ‘terrible’ minor league baseball team names! So bad they’re good...Iron Pigs, Flying Squirrels, Jumbo Shrimp, Isotopes, Rail Riders, Biscuits, Nuts... But maybe it’s because I work in sport apparel and every team is some type of cat or bird.

Me too! Sportslogos.net has some great coverage like the new Rocket City Trash Pandas. Top 10 sports name ever.

That’s amazing 😂

That's a brand new name. I'm exciting to possibly see some Marlins players here, being a Florida transplant.

Sorry to deliver the bad news, but it's highly unlikely the Marlins affiliation will travel with the team to Wichita. I doubt the Marlins would be OK with flying their top prospects halfway across the country (with at least one layover) every time there's a call up. It's safe to say we can expect an affiliation change between now and 2020.

iharland•

You're the reason we cant have nice things.

5
podunkboy•

we've previously been an affiliate for San Diego, Montreal, Chicago - If it wasn't a problem then, it won't be a problem now.

I'm holding out hope for AAA Marlins franchise but would just be happy with any AAA farm team.

The Oakland Athletics AAA affiliate is in Nashville. The New York Mets AAA affiliate is in Las Vegas. The Marlins keeping their affiliation isn't that far-fetched.

DDLincoln•

The two teams have a player development contract that runs through the 2020 season, so they'll be a Marlins affiliate for the next two years, regardless of where they are.

Most MLB/AAA PDCs run through 2020, so a good chance we'll see a change in a few years. But it's Marlins for the next two seasons.

I heard from a co-worker (who had breakfast with the mayor) that if it leaked before a certain time, the team would back out of the deal. Sooo.....I sure hope that time has passed.

We've been hearing here in New Orleans for months that the team was probably moving, so who'd really care if the destination city was announced early?

Wichita Warmouths!
