How long were you dating when you moved in with your SO?

This is a common question in some of the other dating/relationship subs, but curious to hear from those in the city.

NYC is unique: housing costs/roommates/long commutes. In my experience couples move in together a lot faster here than couples who live in more suburban/cheaper cities. What's your experience?

Mostly curious to hear from people who met here (rather than those who moved to the city together for a job), but all comments welcome.

Moved in with my then-boyfriend after about 1.5 years. It was fine at first but honestly looking back at it I don't think it was the right move at the time. We had other issues anyway but living together definitely accelerated our breakup.

Currently dating a guy for 2.5 years and people seem very surprised that we have no intention of moving in with each other. Would we save money by moving in with each other? Absolutely. But we've also discussed it and we both like that we have separate places, and we both can afford our own places. At this point, if it ain't broke why try to fix it?

I also find the same, moving in quicker here is the norm vs elsewhere.

When I moved into my now wife's apartment, we were dating about 5 months. We were planning on waiting longer, even though things were going really well. My then roommates told me she could only come over 1 time every week, and I was working 4 over night shifts at my job at the time, meaning, I wanted to be with her most of the time when I wasn't working and that meant I'd only be at my apartment one night a week. So we talked, and decided that even though it was sooner then we wanted, it made sense to do. It didn't make sense to pay $850/month to spend 4 nights a month in an apartment.

Pretty shitty from your roommate considering you weren’t even there most of the time

Yeah, they sucked. They tried to say my portion of the electric and gas was on the high side, and when I asked to see the bills, they basically told me to go F myself and my gf wasn't allowed around more then 1 day a week.

Man good thing you moved then

We met in the city and were dating for about 6 months before we moved in, and have been dating (now engaged) for the last five years or so. Sure, it's a bit fast vs the norm, but for some people when you know, you know! I also strongly advocate having at least six months of savings in the bank in case things go south, which is a hard ask for some when you're in your twenties and living in one of the most expensive cities in the country. It came in handy for me after unexpectedly breaking up with someone I had moved in with - first/last/security, moving & furniture costs all at once can be pricey without parental help.

Little under two years. It happened naturally. We found ourselves spending all of our time at her place. After a while my apartment became little more than an $1800/month walk-in closet where I would sometimes shower and change.

So, we were living like we were living together anyway, and the fact that halving our individual living expenses has made us both feel like we are filthy rich has only improved our relationship. More money to do fun stuff.

3 or 4 years. I don’t have commitment issues, you have commitment issues.

I know I do. Took me a little over 11 years to propose to my wife.

We’re around ten now and I’m just getting around to it.

Best not to rush these things. Good things take time (like cheese and wine).

The fact that she hasn't murdered you yet should be commended

That’s when I realized I had a keeper.

We waited thirteen years to get married. Saw lots of breakups and divorces throughout that time

Wow! What a keeper to stick it out, though

2 years, 3 months. Moving in together is a pretty big step - we didn't discuss until we were sure we were long-term material.

1.5 years

Just under a year. We found a rent stabilized place so it was good timing.

Just over 2 years.

We’ve been dating less than a year. Plans to move in together next year when our leases are up.
