Probably an intertoto regen but i'd love the Cup Winner's Cup to make a return.
It's to streamline the EL and put a new level below that, so there's be 3 competitions of 32. Sure English teams might not care, but it will be great for the rest of Europe, especially the smaller countries.
My local team is one of the top 3 in Sweden and we cant qualify for EL Group stages
DIF?
Oh hell fucking no. DIF is the worst team in Sweden by far.
They are our bitter rivals. Im talking about AIK
Wouldn't be opposed to the Intertoto making a return. It finished the year I started to pay actual attention to Football so never saw it action. Seems like a good idea though.
Never heard of Intertoto. Got into watching football around 2005. Mind explaining what it was?
Looking into it, all teams that aren't capable of qualifying for European football through their league places can apply to be in the Intertoto Cup. They get put into groups and the winners of the groups get qualification to the next season's European football. Games played over the summer break.
If they plan to shrink the EL to 32 teams I doubt they'll go for this as sometimes up to 11 teams qualified through this competition.
I'd be much more interested in the Cup Winners Cup making a return.
Interesting to think whether the current big 6 would apply for such a competition should they somehow finish outside the usual European berth now.
It had the best trophy going.
I was a huge FC Nantes fan in the early 2000s and I loved Intertoto runs, which we were in every other year at least. I was a kid back then so everything was fun tbh, but I've got fond memories of this cup and would love for it to come back.
FC Nantes your second team and FC Liverpool your first team?
BTW Intertoto was always fun to say too.
FC Nantes was my first love, I live close enough and my dad knew someone at la Beaujoire so he got us tickets a few times. I liked Liverpool at the time but mostly because I hated Man United, after they cheated their way to a 1-1 at la Beaujoire in the CL.
I really became a Liverpool fan in the early 2010s when I moved to England. I still kinda follow FC Nantes but really not as much.
Bring back the cup winners cup.
Only cup we haven't won
Which is part of the reason i want back
I would love a return to the old format. The UEFA cup was a daunting prospect back then as you would have 3 or 4 monster teams from the top leagues. As much as I love CL football, the shine is definitely off it when it has a whole load of teams who aren't champions.
ā
The Inter-Toto cup was a pre-season thing to get European football. That wouldn't make a lot of sense if they are looking at three competitions. The Inter-Toto was wrapped up by August and had 6 "winners" =/
Ah, others have mentioned that it could be Cup Winners Cup making a return? That would work if they move all 3 EUFA club comps to 32 teams as rumoured.
Don't understand, how in the actual fuck can they fit in another CL-like competition in the season? No way bigger teams can fit that into the schedule
I assume it's a lower-tier club competition, so maybe the likes of Bournemouth etc. can play regularly in a cup against mid/bottom teams in La Liga. That could be interesting
From what I understand (and that isn't a lot).
Bring back the Intertoto Cup - small teams that can't make European football have a chance to get entry to next years EL.
or
Bring back the Cup Winners Cup - Only the league winners of Europe and last years CWC champion gets in.
In this case maybe the League winner doesn't go into the CL and the CL is reserved for the top teams without the League winner? Would devalue the CL like no-ones business though...
So the "prestige-o-meter" would go
Cup Winners Cup -> CL -> EL
Either way the EL would need cutting down as UEFA said they want 3 comps of 32 teams.
Bring back the Cup Winners Cup - Only the league winners of Europe and last years CWC champion gets in.
Why do league winners want to enter a lower tier competition when they're already eligible for the Champions League? Surely you meant CUP winners? š
Cup Winners Cup -> CL -> EL
Cup Winners Cup is top, then Champions League, then Europa League.
They wouldn't be entering a lower competition... they would be entering at the top.
As mentioned the only issue with this is that it devalues the Champions League.
Cup Winners Cup -> CL -> EL
I'm not sure I understand you properly, how can the CWC be ranked above the CL?
Shouldn't it be:
CL > CWC > EL?
Much like how the Premier League is valued above the FA Cup, a Euro competition for Cup-Winners should be ranked slightly below the CL for League-Winners and above the EL for the rest, just like how it used to be.
Nevertheless, Cup-Winners used to be treated with more respect, in that the UEFA Super Cup used to be between the winners of the CL vs the winners of the CWC, the winner of the EL (UEFA Cup as it was known) doesn't get to participate as they're neither League-Winners nor Cup-Winners.
Teams will only be part of one of the competitions. Either CL, EL or this new one
I guess you can have it in off weeks where there usually aren't European nights so's not to clog up midweek too much
This could be really could for League of Ireland clubs as a potential money spinner and way to improve players, something thatās important as the FAI couldnāt give a rats about the league or about developing new players.
It could, but I hear the FAI are incredibly shit, with the league Chairman taking a larger salary than the winning club of the League of Ireland gets?
Yep, IIRC itās ā¬100,000 or so for the winners compared to ā¬350,000 for Delaneyās salary. Delaney (CEO of the FAI) has also referred to the league as a āproblem childā in the past. To put it into context, when Dundalk reached the Europa league group stages in 2016 they earned something like ā¬3 million in prize money and tv earnings.
EDIT: also, out of the I think ā¬18 million that the FAI got for Irelandās euro 2016 run, the FAI gave each club ā¬5,000, which a number of clubs turned down in protest.
Seems like an all round twat.
How can you justify that salary when you're league is so poor. No offense.
More Europe could be the step up smaller leagues need to start more growth of local talent etc.
Oh no offense taken at all, as a match going fan I fully agree.
He canāt justify that salary, but gets away with it for a couple of reasons.
Firstly is the fact that his partner, a PR specialist makes sure that the press has next to no exposure to him.
Then youāve got the band of yes men that heās developed around him, lads who heās fed scraps to just to keep onside. This is shown by the likes of Noel King, an incompetent manager still being under 21s manager and Brian Kerr, our most successful underage manager having no role whatsoever in the FAI.
On a side note, Delaney was prepared for this job by his dad, a former FAI treasurer who was involved in a scandal that saw a ticket tout make something like £200,000 from selling FAI tickets to the 1994 World Cup, money that disappeared from FAI accounts.
His incompetence is also impressive, and most clearly seen in regards to the Aviva Stadium, the ground where we played Napoli this summer. He arranged a complete clusterfuck of a premium level scheme that lost a pile of money, and meanwhile the FAI is still ā¬29 million in debt for the building of the stadium.
Basically: he always cheats, he always lies, fuck Delaney and the FAI.
Gotta give ManU somewhere to play I guess
(āļ¾ć®ļ¾)ā
Some clubs will finally win a trophy after 1995...
The international carabao euro - american cup
The AT&T international carabao euro - american cup
My club once won the Intertoto, in 2008 i think, it was such a great year knowing we were going to play in the Uefa cup qualifiers. We won the league in 2011, the only time we actually did it and again it was amazing to see us play against basel and shitchester united in the Champions league.
Hopefully this competition will bring the same levels of happiness for these low level clubs as Intertoto brought to me.
Braga? The last winners according to Wikipedia. So you could say you still hold the title....
I keep changing my mind on what I'd prefer. Cup Winners Cup would be what the CL should be, just the league winners from around Europe fighting it out to see who's best. Hopefully in a knockout system rather than group system.
Or go for Intertoto so we can see some of the "poorer" teams get Europe and have summer football.
Hmm, no, it was Otelul Galati. I have no idea what's going on here. Here - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ASC_O%C8%9Belul_Gala%C8%9Bi#Golden_Age_of_O%C8%9Belul_(1999%E2%80%932012) is the wiki page for my team, just search Intertoto and you'll see a description of both the matches in the final. What the hell man?!
ah, the Wiki page doesn't go by season, just by year, so it says 2008 was the last year the cup ran so I assumed it was that year as Oţelul Galaţi are listed as 2007.
Well, yeah. I think bringing back the Cup Winners Cup might be more interesting. I'm too young to really remember it's significance, but taking the winners of every local cup across European leagues, might make things more interesting. It's how it was before, I guess.
It would take some shine away from the Champions League, but actually show who's the best in Europe. Logistics might be a bit of a nightmare, though.
100% agree. It would massively destabilise the Champions League. All the sudden it isn't the Pinnacle of club football anymore, they'd be mad to do it.
What do we think?
Another lower tier Cup, or are they going for a new Champions league with just the top dogs to warn off a breakaway League?
Oh god just imagine the way the skill gap between the top teams would massively increase if this happened
There's an independent article on Soccer and people seem to think it will be a regen of the Intertoto cup, so it will happen in the summer break when there are no club competitions if I have read correctly.
Hopefully we aren't getting a "Super League".
Champions league will be the same I think. Itāll be 32 teams in each competition, so the Europa league will get smaller
I saw rumours earlier in the week with UEFA saying they wanted 3 comps with 32 teams each. The Independent article says this will boost UEFA teams in competitions to 96, so makes sense.
When it was rumoured the other week it was a third tier competition below Europa for smaller nations and clubs, basically the Intertoto
Hopefully they'll let our u23s in
Your minds are really going to be blown when the MOA between UEFA and the various domestic leagues is rewritten / renewed in 2024ish and CL matches from the quarterfinals on will be played on the weekend - requiring a shift of some domestic matches to midweek.
either you qualify for Europe or you get relegated
I'm assuming the new tournament will go in below the Europa League?
There are quite a few mid-table clubs that never get a whiff of Europe. I think this would be very exciting for their fan bases. You and I won't watch, but they will. And hey, if it means the mid-table clubs have to play more matches and can't rest up before playing us, why complain?
If it's anything like the Europa, it should be fun. The teams may be mediocre but the 'competition' itself is fun to watch.
I agree, sometimes it's much more fun to watch a few relatively unknowns batter each other than Real and Juve slog out a 1-0
Any day man. Sick of the few teams that keep making the final year in year out.
Same drab bullshit with focus on the stars and all the pre game hype and no end product.
The Europa League was so much fun to watch last year.
100%, look at the year we made the EL final, the CL was boring that year. I remember going out to watch the CL final in town and I barely remember it. Even though we didn't win I still remember that EL Final because the run was amazing.
So probably something akin to the Intertoto cup or maybe Cup Winners Cup with a guaranteed place in next year's Europa League for the winner. Will be interesting to see what the plan is although I suspect it won't really have an influence on LFC (unless we go back to finishing 7th or 8th or something like this).
Donāt think itās a good idea. Adding European matchdays to the calendar could prove to be disastrous to a smaller side. See 05-06 Mainz. They really suffered domestically because of European duties.
If it is the Intertoto it would happen over the summer, pre-season, so the clubs can gain access to European football they otherwise couldn't get.
Congrats Everton
They'll deteriorate enough and not qualify for that too.
Enjoy Tbilisi away, cunts.
Most expensive setup in the 3rd tier of European comp..
Still go out in the group stages...
Tranmere Rovers would like to have a word with you
