The cheesiest love poem I've written yet
for Caitlin
what words may rise,
but the cursive of birds
to chronicle your winged love;
this flight within my heart
as boundless and as free,
which leaves me breathless
as the rushing wind?
what earth may ground a heart
which only knows the dizzied kiss
of your nimbus lips, light
as a raindrop in suspension,
synapses overcast and spent
skin shattering with each brush
of tempest tongue? as heavens
open for an instant to strand you here
with me, your bright brown eyes
brimming with lightning between
each blink, your skin of dying suns--
your laughter stretching horizons
across the room-- your curled form
between black sheets; a moon
which pools softly into the dark lake
of my embrace, not for a second stirring
to fragment such a carefully composed
stillness-- my breath small as stars,
my heart forgetting fall from flight,
my soul simply existing in the expanding universe
that is my love for you.
