First poem shared- "Peaches"

These words aren’t mine.

At least, I hope they’re not.

They’re digging at something I know that I knew

But conveniently, I forgot.

I’m sorry, I think.

Or again, maybe not.

There’s a sword that’s hanging by a thread

high above my head, and any second now

the other shoe will drop.

So, sorry, but you can take my seat.

Maybe I’ll grieve when I’m feeling better

or maybe I’ll finally feel relief.

I’ll leave, one day!

Just not today.

For now, I have poison to spit

From my mouth like the pit

Of a rotten peach.

I had to! Please!

That soft fruit is not so sweet

When the core of it chips away at your teeth

And sends fragments and grit

Deep into your belly. It’s better to spit.

Maybe one day I’ll sew up the lips

That drip arsenic yellow, with thick double stitch.

Years from now, I’ll carve the pit from the peach

And grind it into dust.

(But not for a while, I admit.)
