Not a Love Poem

We were probably never in love

Not that first night when you showed up with pizza

And made friends with my cat.

Maybe

I trusted his feline instincts or

Maybe I was just lonely.

I didn’t ask you to stay but you stayed anyway.

 

We were probably never in love

Not those first few months when you wouldn’t stop kissing me

And the only music we agreed on was Dire Straits

But we stayed up til four talking about your fucked up family

And how much I was missing mine.

I didn’t ask you to live with me but you

Moved in anyway.

 

We were probably never in love

Not as I began to realise that

Despite being told my whole life I’m too soft-hearted

That gentleness didn’t always apply to you.

We’d say hurtful things and I’d take your words and turn them into stone.

I didn’t want to build a wall but that’s what happened anyway.

 

We were probably never in love

Not when you’d get moody because i said it was too hot to hold your hand

Not when you’d let my cold feet be pressed into your warm calves

Not when we’d fight and you’d be the one to cry

While I, my feelings soft as granite,

detached and broken,

Didn’t.

 

I was probably never in love but

Maybe

You were.
